A Reg Maestro Wiper Problems

The wipers were frozen to the windscreen on tuesday and it looks like I did not switch them off quick enough, the wipers will now hardly move. How much of a job and how costly will replacing the wiper motor or whatever is wrong be?

i belive the wiper motor is about three bolts.. about 30 minuits , with a coffee. 15 Mins easy if you were in a rush. .

It sounds to me like you have broken the grooves on the part of the motor your wiper arms attach to. Pull up the little plastic covers and undo the nut holding the arms to the motor. Remove your wiper arms and the stump that is left should have lots of very tiny grooves in it. My theory is that turning the wipers on when they were stuck to the windscreen has ripped all the little grooves off and thus gives your wiper arms nothing to grip to and hence they do not move. In the past I have cured this problem by wrapping a suitably sized piece of carrier bag around the stump where the grooves once were, putting the wiper arm back on and tightening it up.

If you are really lucky, you may just get away with simply tightening the nuts under the plastic covers. They may just have loosened and come undone rather than stripping the grooves off the stump of the motor.

Was not as bad as it seemed, simply tightened the nuts and the wipers are working fine again.

They are pretty stong those motors. I have done the same as you a couple of times on my A-reg Maestro and the fuse will go before the motor which is far easier to replace.

Thaks again, the next big problem for dear old Xophie will be getting her through the MOT at the begining of next month, she has just passed the 41,000 mark so she has done 5,000 miles since last April after 22 years of doing less than 2,000 miles a year.

They certainly must be very strong motors. The Maestro had stood for three days when I went out to her yesterday. It was solid with snow and started the engine first while I began moving the thick snow from the rear and side windows. I finally got to the windscreen in a few minutes and began moving about three inches of snow off.
Halfway there and the wipers began moving.....They had been left switched on before the snow.
Raced round and turned the switch off but it was determined to park itself.
Turned off the ignition and completed the snow clearance and then tried the wipers expecting nothing. They worked perfectly...... Credit to whoever makes the motor.

yes, she's the '21000 mile' Clubman from Bolton.
Arrived on 3 Feb, mot-ed on 5th, retested the same afternoon, now taxed and mot for 12 months. Now I've got one for each foot!
Unfortunately Angina also needed taxing, so my car account has taken quite a knock this month. What a good job it's 'only' £110 a year.:) :)
