That's pretty much what it's worth if rust-free, which it could be. Then again it could have been sprayed up for a quick profit. Look's nice and unmodified, shame it hasnt got the turbo decals.

Yes it seems to be missing all the turbo decals including the blackout stickers on the front and rear bumpers, and its rubbing strips on the doors.

84k is not an unreasonable mileage, but neither is it especially low when the car has a "buy it now" price of £2,800.

Good grief what would my turbo, G51, be worth - in more or less as new condition and fully 'decalled' - with only 28k?

Be interesting to see what bids it attracts

Just looked again at the underbonnet photo. I wonder what the story is behind the VIN plate being moved from the base of the nearside B-pillar to the underbonnet slam-panel?

I also notice from the view of the back of the car that the rear wiper's autopark has packed in, like so many others

Maybe it was moved to stop people verifying if its an orginal or not?

What?? Yours too?? Surely not, on such a minter as F170? 'Fraid if F170 was my car that little niggle would just *have* to be fixed on what seems to be your otherwise perfect example of AUSTIN's finest...

More likely it was moved when either the sill or the B-pillar itself was repaired at some stage. Not a bad sign, so long as the repairs have been completed professionally, which is something you cannot judge without seeing the car 'in the flesh'

If he's only used to Escorts he'll have been quite surprised by that thing he found under the Turbo's bonnet called an 'engine'

No bids as yet, I notice...though there's nearly six days still left.

My opinion is that its enforced starting price is double what it should be. It just won't pull in the bidders. The minimum you can offer is £2,500!

A mint 40k MG Maestro EFi brought £1,400 on e-bay earlier this year, but it built up to that price over a number of days from about 1/10th of that amount. Towards the end of the auction there were mainly just two people fighting over it. If the enforced starting price had been £1,000 I think it would have remained unsold with 0 bids.

 Well, I'll go to the foot of our stairs  as they say here Up North: someone's actually bid the £2.5k starting price!

Of course there's the suspicious cynical side of me which wonders if its the seller himself or a friendly cohort trying to make the bidding look a little more 'frantic' to attract more bids...

Course there's always the risk that such a tactic will backfire on you...that happend to a young lad at work who was trying to get the best price for his PS2 some while back, and he was bidding mainly against this one other person to get the price up...but he sucessfully outbid the other person and won his own auction

Obviously then stuck with both his PS2 AND seller's fees

Think you might be onto something there John. The person selling the car is called Steve (wow, thats rare:rolleyes: ) and look who made the first bid? Thats right, a Steve, who has recently joined. A co-inkiydink? I think not...

Hi folks,

Looks tidy on the photos, but then they always do. I saw a car on ebay which looked tidy, but was awful in the flesh. To me these cars are only worth keep stock if they are completly factory standard, once they stary from that you might aswell do all the nice mods like lowering it and wheels, colour coding certain bits etc.

Oh by the way i've started making the EVO kits up and they will have thick Gelcoat this time.

I thought that one on Autotrader was at £3,495...?

(might have been reduced to £3,195..)

Have you seen what else is on ebay?

A rare piece of british Leyland history & its cheap.

The seller has a few rare motors on there.

check item number 2441854172

You wont believe theres any of these still around.

P.S. a tip about the alternator I needed for my Limo.

I used one from A 1300 Maestro van.

They are exactly the same.

Glass's on-line don't quote a price on any car older than 1995; not sure what their trade-bible goes back to. Unless there is a 'classic' Glass'. Doubt it!

Re: the e-bay item, I didn't even know there were any made in the first place, let alone any survivors!

£155 isnt that much for something unique....

Well, the bidding on the Turbo ended after having attracted just that one bid of £2.5k, which didn't meet the reserve price.

So why go setting a starting-price so obviously high, then set your reserve even higher

Must admit I had a healthy suspicion about that one bid

No Turbo is really worth that much. If someone pays £3,500 for one then they are paying nearly twice as much as you would if you picked one up from the MG M Group classifieds.

Turbo prices seem to have been falling recently as more and more enthusiasts are selling cars they have had for quite a while. £1500 seems about the going rate for a decent one with around 100K miles.

I like ebay alot and use it to buy spares but I wouldn't recommend buying a Maestro Turbo on ebay without going to view it.

The auction has now ended and guess what? Steve, the only bidder seems to have bid £2500 for his own car, not met his own reserve and not won his car in the auction, leaving it unsold!

Looks like a great condition car though and if the blurb is to believed it has probably been repaired really well.

I think someones playing the same game with the meastro turbo bodykit thats on there now, 3 bids, two bidders each have never won an item before and now the pice is going up now £225

I never get into a bidding war on e-bay, especially with a bidder who has no feedback from other auctions. Always read the feedback of the seller and other bidders to get an idea of how legit they all are.

Just goes to show there are some dodgy people out there bidding on Ebay!

What's your name on ebay then? As you know I just use my own name because I am rubbish at remembering userids and passwords.

Was that the headlamp protectors? They tempted me more than most items on there but they got too expnsive.

26th November 2003, 19:26
I know you bid against me on them, and subsequently got too expensive for me as well. We both lost out.

We didn't win because the other bidder was prepared to pay more than both of us. You would have lost anyway even if I had never bid.

My original point was to be wary of suspect bidders who are pushing the price up because they are acting on behalf of the seller. This is very different from several people bidding on an item that they really want to buy.

Ebay is still a good source for Maestro things and some things get no bids at all.

Good point Matthew, something i've already pointed out. I got my headlamp protector's today! Bit of a rarity, fit really well, and i only paid £16 for them, a bargain, considering the rarity.

And yet some things are not so much of a bargain, I was after a pair of brake discs from Ebay last week for my 2.0 MG, after 21 bids the item ended at £41 + the postage (which wasn't quoted but would have been pretty expensive due to the weight), I rang my nearest motor factors and they are £39.30 a pair, just goes to show that Ebay isn't always the best place for a bargain

I knew the point you were trying to make about dodgy bidders pushing the price up for the seller. But you wanted to know who was bidding against you on the headlamp protectors, so I just posted saying it was me. Not to worry tho, I informed another member of the club that the price had rose more than I was willing to pay, so they bought them instead. So at least they went to a good home where they will be appreciated. :)

Not always the case, most people don't use proxy bidding and bid at the last minute. Trying to outwit the other buyer. In this particular case I was on a faster than T3 connection, to someone who was probably on broadband. So if the price hadn't risen so quickly so early I may have stood a chance at the last minute.

But this is all hypothesis and it didn't happen. So tough s**t on my part, thats the way ebay works so I should live with it. I don't really mind to be honest, as they have gone to someone else who really wanted them.

I know what you mean about some things not being so much of a bargain nowadays. Seems every bloke and their dog are on their looking to buy goods. I normally always check the retail price of goods, before i bid.

I thinking about selling some of my bits 'n' pieces on there now, seeing as things tend to sell for more than the going rate of the item :) I think it would be best to wait after christmas tho, as most people's money will be spent on presents in the next month and not knick knacks.

Great stuff - I am sure they will look good on Gareth's Turbo. I thought it may have been Gareth who had won but wasn't sure because there are a few people with similar handles 'MGTurbo', 'TurboMG' etc.

I am pleased that they are going on one of our member's car because I don't always recognise the bidders on ebay especially when I am bidding for magazines, etc with Maestro articles or models where you are bidding against model car enthusiasts.
