Hello All

Following us changing the clutch on Saturday on our 1.6 montego proir to our cross desert jaunt we have noticed that car has appeared to have developed quite a considerable oil leak in the area of the L/H drive shaft. I have been advised that in the process of removing the drive shaft we may have damaged the oil seal. Is this Likely to be the case? If so is changing one a big job? and would you recommend doing the other side as a matter of course
Finally where is the best place to get one cheap? I don't really really want to spend much as we only paid £45 for the car!

All the Best

Hi. Sounds like you have a 88 on montego 1.6 with Pg1 type gearbox, if that is the case just check that the shaft is fully inserted, but it sounds likely that you will have damaged the driveshaft oil seal with the splines of the driveshaft when you removed or refitted it.

Not a big job, once the driveshaft is out the seal just prises out with a screwdriver then carefully knock the new one in to the same depth as the old one. Take care not to touch the lip seal with the driveshaft when you refit it, top up the gearbox with engine oil when done and clean all oil away from gearbox so you can see that the job is fixed.

If the other side is not leaking then i would leave it.

Cheers Gary :)

I always run a smear of grease around the recess in the seal that the driveshaft runs against.

The best place to get a seal cheap is to get the old one out in one piece (ish) and read the numbers from it or take it to your local bearings and seals factors and they'll get you one. Otherwise I seem to recall them being about a fiver each from your Rover/MG place.
