View Full Version : Vacuum system: I've lost a pipe!

I thought I'd finished reassembling F153's engine when I realised that I hadn't connected a vacuum pipe from the inlet manifold to the switch thingy that is stuck into the rubber thing at the back of the plenum.
I took a look at the Rover parts CD and Haynes (P. 259) only to find that there should be a T piece on that pipe, with one end going to the inlet manifold, one and to the swtitchy thing in the plenum and the other end seems to go off down the back of the engine. Where's it going?!
I'm sure that originally F153 didn't have a T piece and that pipe wnet directly to the inlet manifold from the switchy thing.
Any ideas?
BTW, we're talking about an S-Series engine here.

Hello there,
Having recently taken apart the whole fuel/air system on my VdP an innumerable number of times (see my previous postings on blowing exhaust manifolds) I think there may be either a problem or a misunderstanding here!!
I cannot find the Haynes page reference you mention; which edition are you using - I have the 1992 & 1996 editions?
There are, or at least there were on my Vdp; and this seemed to be confirmed by the Haynes', only the hose from the inlet manifold (the Servo Vacuum unit) to the plenum and then from the plenum to the air (filter) box.
The only hose with a T-piece is the vacuum hose from the ECU to the carb'.
I don't know if this helps but if you find different please let us know!!

Thing? Thingy? You sound like my Mum:laugh:
On the pipe front though, it sounds familiar to me about what you said about the straight connection to the manifold, so I would say try that.
Mind you, I had put twin Weber's on mine way back when, so it's never been the same since!

I Dont think i would worry most 1.6S series maestro's i have come across are piped as yours is. I just wonder could it be that the heater on the early maestro had a vacuum controlled air duct, and the pipe went through the bulkhead from such a tee piece.

The early Maestro definitely has a vacuum controlled air duct for the heater. I was surprised to read about it! I don't know who this information may help, but it's good to know these things.

Could it not be that the tee piece with a pipe going down the back of the engine shown in the Haynes manual and on the rover micro fisch is the one that goes to the heater valve on the early maestro? The pipe that the origional postee is inquiring about. ;)

While we're on the subject of this - what part of the heater does this vacuum pipe control? Why does it need one?
