We are looking at the possibility of acquiring an ex-MoD Metro and/or Montego for an Army Museum.
The Metro City 3 door saw service from 1985 (facelift variant) until the mid 90s. Most were solid gloss black 3 door variants, and were used as utility staff cars, although a number of vans were also procured in the same colour.
The Montego replaced the Vauxhall Cavalier Mk2 saloon from late 1993. 2350 cars were delivered in DLX (turbo diesel) spec in a variety of colours. They are usually identifiable by their reading lights on flexible stalks (2 next to the rear seat belt mounts and one on the outer floor beside the front passenger seat) and lack of a sunroof. Despite being LX spec, they had the sunroof deleted from the spec as that was considered too indulgent for taxpayers’ money! They were invariably solid colours for the same reason.
We had an offer of an ex-MOD Montego in pretty good overall condition. Unfortunately for us, it was an ex-RAF staff car so we weren't able to accept it, which was a bit of a disappointment. We can only accept an ex-Army one. The car had been registered by the MOD on 31 Jan 94 as 48 KL 31. After a brief spell in the depot it was sent to RAF High Wycombe where it served as a station staff car. It was sold to Lex in 96 and leased back to the MOD as 'white fleet' (non-deployable civilian spec) vehicles were then hired on contract. It was probably disposed of in about 1997.
We are interested in speaking to anyone who might be able to help us source such models, and possibly help to restore them. We are also seeking photographs of such cars. All offers/leads gratefully received. We hold the records for former MOD vehicles so confirming their identity is (usually) fairly simple.
