There are two things that are bothering my about a couple of pictures in my blue Haynes Manual.

Take a look at pages 170 and 171:

On 170, picture 15.3 shows a Mk.1 Maestro steering column cowel but there's a rogue vertically-mounted rocker switch just behind the ignition barrel. All of the Mk. 1 Maestros I've come across have lacked this switch, so what is it for??!

On 171, picture 17.2 shows an instrumant panel being removed but just look at that steering wheel! That's not a Maestro steering wheel!

The switch is probably for one of the optional electrical items, such as remote tailgate release or front fogs.

Certainly right about the steering-wheel: definately a third-party item

The switch is for the panel light dimmer if I remember rightly.

The panel light dimmer is a twisty switch (potentiometer sort of thing) next to where the choke would be. F153 is talking about a rocker switch actually mounted on the steering column cowling. Maybe it is a badly hidden immobiliser! ;)

Unipart optional cruise control?
The optional boot release button is lower down on the dash, hidded
below/behind where the steering column goes through.

Personnally, i'd bet on it being a switch for the optional fog lamps.
