Happy new year to you all!!! - my new years resolution is to sort out all those niggly problems on my E reg Maestro 2L Efi :-). The ones i'm struggling with are the speedo cable and the reverse lights.........

The speedo hasn't been working for a while now - mainly because my local factor hasnt been able to source the cables. I bought a new cable from ebay and that didnt fix it. The cable is split up into two parts - the actual cable and a gearbox sender. Do anyone know what this part is actually called and where I can get one from?

Secondly my reverse lights don't work. I've checked the lights and fuse and they are both ok. What else should I check?

Any thoughts on either are appreciated!!

Thanks - Redm

Hi, I think you are refering to the road speed transducer which provides a road speed signal to the fuel injection ecu. Apart from the fact it is fitted inbetween the speedo cables it has no function in regards to the speedo.

You would have to try the dealer or scrap yard but I dont think it would be causing a speedo fault. to check out the speedo disconnect the cable at the speedo so it is visible from the drivers seat, then jack up one front wheel and get an assistant to turn the wheel or run the engine in gear at low revs to see if the inner cable is turning. If it is the speedo head is at fault. If it does not turn work back in a similar way looking at the small cable, speed transducer and speedo drive in gearbox. If the gearbox speedo drive is not turning then the fault is either the speedo drive or the gear on the final drive inside the gearbox.

For the reverse lights check that they work with the wires connected together at the gearbox switch. if they do then the fault is the switch or less likely the gear box itself.

Thanks for the reply GForce! The reason why I think it's this speed transducer thing is because the 'wire' inside the speedo cable in both the old and the new one was squared and the hole in the transducer was round. The wire bit goes inside nicely and fastens down ok but still no speed registering on the dash.

Interesting about the reverse lights - not too sure where to look but i'll play about with it tomorrow

If I remember correctly the reverse switch is on the front facing side of the gearbox below the clutch release arm. Two wires connect to it and it can be reached from under the bonnet or underneath whichever you find easiest.

The hole in the transducer may just look rounded when veiwed but if the small cable is turning (see edit) and the large cable does not, then the fault must be the road speed transducer as you suspect.

I've just spend a few minutes under the bonnet and sure enough, there is a cable missing out of the reverse light switch. I've just checked ebay for a new one, but could only find one for the 1.3 & 1.6 model.

Thanks for your help GForce :D
