Dave

"762" cos its the numberplate!!! Not very original - but theres plenty of properly named Maesty's and Monty's as i'm sure we're about to see!!

30th May 2003, 23:27
George. (after the rainbow character) because he's sort of an off white, and rather iffeminate - as he's only a 1.3) Our rover214 is named Zippy. All I need now is a turbo and we'll have a bungle!

Of course when trying to remove thermostat housing bolts George wasn't referred to as George very often, mostly by 4 letter words and things I can't type here. ;)

"Monty". Possibly unoriginal, but that's what my deceased missus called him, and we were struggling to make a nickname from e692wtt this side of Whittier, named after one of the founders of the Quaker movement... The missus had a very soft spot for Monty - ever seen the film (or read the Stephen King book) 'Christine'???

Don't ask (no, I'm not a Quaker).

The other other Rich.

"Aggie"

There are not many names you can make from the letters 'AGD', but its short and suits her personality perfectly.

...And no - she doesnt give me a load of AGGro!

He generally answers to "CHO" simply because that's the last three letters of the registration mark. Interesting to see that some cars are male and others are female. How ever do we tell?

Austin-Rover

I dont know how my car happened to be Female - i think it was when she embarrased me infront of the RAC man when she refused to start (he started it first turn of the key). Ever since then, i have always thought of it as Female!

The cars personality decides if its Male or Female.

Whilst all our cars are really family cars, one is registered and insured in my Dad's name, and the other in my Mum's name. The tradition has become that all those registered to my Dad are male and all those registered to my Mum are female.
The tradition is also that the name of the car begins with the same letter as the first letter of the model (Maestro, Mini, etc.). The problem is that for most of my life we have owned cars whose model begins with the letter 'M'. Hence, the previous Maestro was Michael and the current one is Murray. Given that I, obviously, intend to have many more Maestros in the future, I might have to come up with a different system...

I can't use my numberplate for a name....it's very inaccurate and insulting to the car..."DUD"!

The AA man found it MOST amusing:censored: ....

Usually referred to as "your car" by family/missus, and H870 or "old girl" by me..

My VP is called Hexie, as in Hexie the Hexagon - so called because Chris once mentioned that Maestros are vaguely hexagonal in shape, so we've called them Hexagons ever since. Hexie was originally called Hex but that's another word for "curse" so after a run of bad luck he was renamed. F506 MDL, the camper, was called "Muddle" because of the numberplate. It was always supposed to be something more dignified, but somehow Muddle stuck. B606 WBM the racecar was originally just called "WBM," pronounced "Wubum", but that's mutated into "Bubble" now. The Greeny doesn't have a name yet, other than just "Greeny". I haven't driven the Turbo yet other than to turn it round in a side street, so I haven't had a chance to get to know it well enough to give it a name. Our other cars are Mr Frosty the white Cavalier, and J576 VOG the racing Mini, known as Voggie. Mum and Dad's Maestro 1.3HLE never had a name until they got BON ("Bonnie") the Rover 400, when the HLE became "Clyde" :)

For some reason, ours have always been males *shrug*

My Montego was called 'LYN' because the number plate was E722 LYN. He/She was a hermaphrodite. And also an extremely good car. That's the only car I've had that has been named.

do u know how cheep a private plate is now? ggt = going (to)get two or groovy gt or time to buy a new maestro?

D87 SMW
12th June 2003, 17:41
Very nearly bought a plate from DVLA for £250 which would solve the problem of finding a name- M13 SPE M for Maestro, 13 with the screw between the numbers for 1.3, and SPE for Special.
This was until I found out that you can't have an 'M' plate on an F reg car. :(
No idea why this is, they say it is making the car seem 'newer.' But the two numbers indicate that it is a private plate anyhow. Some really stupid regulations nowadays. :banghead: :(

However, I have been looking for personalised plates, but all the ones that are £250 are over F reg. :(
If anyone can find SPE 13M anywhere, please, let me know! :banghead:

I must be very boring as I have never named any of my Maestros although three out of four have carried my private plate MAT99V but as its my name - I never called the cars MAT.

I used to call my car "The MG" until we had two MG Maestros so now it is "The Turbo" or "The 1600" or sometimes they are refered to by their colours.

Our 1.3 HLE had the registartion A292 MWD but we never called it Maud!

The registration rules have existed for over twenty years and you have not been able to make your car look newer by transfering the plates. It is to stop unscrupulous dealers from charging more for a car because it appears newer than it actually is.

One of the best plates I have seen on an MG Maestro Turbo is MGT 2L - spot on!

How about M435TRO - someone must have that on a car and it could go on a 94/95 Maestro or a Ledbury car.

I have had four Maestros a 1.3, a 1.6 and two 2-litres and they have all started eagerly and never made me late for work. Even the MG 1600 (which was notorious for hot-starting problems) starts eagerly.

Oooh, did the 1600 come with soundproofing under the bonnet? I'll have to get some for mine one day.

MaestroMatt
23rd June 2003, 09:16
The VP 1.6 also had pretty good soundproofing under the bonnet and it keeps the engine hot for ages when you stop which is dead handy if you then want to start again. Should be easy to salvage from a scrapped car.

e692wtt
23rd June 2003, 20:40
Why not... change your name to match the car's number plate? This was originally a letter to Viz magazine about 20 years ago, but it's still relevant.

Yours truly,

Mr 'just call me Mr E' E692 WTT.

Might end up with some duplication though, which would make things, errm, interesting. Seriously, one reason for NOT changing your cars registration number is that the car would immediately lose all its history, unless you retained the original number (which isn't, I think, what normally happens, and would cost you money).

The other other Rich, aka E692 WTT (or e692wtt as before)............

Yes - the MG1600 does have soundproofing as did all MG versions of the Maestro. My 1.3HLE did not have sound-proofing so perhaps no 1.3 models did?

Take back all that I said about the starting! Well I have no trouble starting the MG1600 even when hot but it does stall annoyingly in this hot weather when I brake hard!

And besides there wasn't a character named bodge in the rainbow series.

There used to be Jane Rod and Freddy. I quite fancied Jane at one time ;)
Also, I'm sure that there was a little graphic interlude on Rainbow called "Curly and Straight." The best bit on Rainbow was one day when Geoffrey took George, Zippy and Bungle-Bonce (as Zippy called him) to fill up with petrol in Geoffrey's L reg Harvest Gold Austin 1300. Lots of uncensored British Leyland action there. They didn't account for the fact that there would be, amongst the hoardes of jammy faced kids watching, Leyland lads like me. Pure class!

I applaud your calling your cars by the names of Rainbow characters. Do any of your cars assume the same basic characteristic of their respective Rainbow namesake by any chance? :D

Well yes they are a lot like their characters.
Zippy ('93 Rover 214Sli 16V) is loud, brash, and a bit of a hooligan.
George ('92 1.3 Ex police maestro) is sort of an off white and a bit effeminate (sp?) and the shy retiring type.
Geoffrey ('83 1.6 VDP maestro) is old but sophisticated, relaxed and smooth (I also have my suspicions that he is a bit of a ladies man!)
Jane (2.0D Tandy Maestro Camper van) is a typical female. Moody, a bit unreliable, loud and high maintainance.
