We have just fitted a reconditioned starter motor, and it doesn't work. The original problem was that the starter motor did not turn, although the solenoid clicked. The replacement has a diffferent problem - the motor rotates but the pinion does not engage. Another recon motor - or can either of the starter motors be fixed?

I'd hand it back to the people who you got it off.. and ask for a replacement motor.
if this one was faulty too.. if start working back along the ignition looms etc.

With the starter motor off the engine, have a feel of the teeth on the 'ring gear' (the teeth that the pinion should engage with) and see if they are worn.
If they are ok, then I'd say 'faulty starter motor' too. Take it back to the supplier. But before condemning the new motor, it might be worth seeing if the pinion will move out on its shaft - if it needs lubricating then use graphite from a pencil (by rubbing) and not oil. If no joy then take it back.
Can you let us have details of the engine we are dealing with, and on which car? That would possibly help us to help you :) .
