View Full Version : HLE intermittent wipe?

Should my 84 HLE have intermittent wipe? At the moment it does a flick-wipe if you press the lever down. The manual just says "intermittent wipe (if fitted)" cos the manual is for all models except the VP and MG, so doesn't give me a clue.

It should have it as my 1.3 L same age did, one flick down set it to intermittant although obviously not as good as the variable speed one fitted to later cars.

Yeh, it should have it John - as Gareth says, just flick down to activate, flick down again to deactivate. That said, my 1.3L didn't have it, or it didn't work - might be the relay has died?

Cheers guys, I'll whip the relay out of my VP and try that. That's one great benefit of having two similar cars: you can chop and change stuff until you find what's busted :D I might have a wiper relay amongst my small stash.
EDIT: just had a thought: were there different types, eg new type old type, as I *think* my spare relays came from a Mems Monty Turbo?

Yes John it should have.
Just a shame the set up omitted a flick wipe though.
A bit of a pain having to turn the wipers on/off just to clear the screen.
How I miss 'Nellie's' foibles...

I'm pretty sure you could pull the lever back and it would give a flick wipe but that was many years ago, a quick tap of the washers would also allow a single wipe.

It is a very simple setup as it is and the later 1.3L (or LS as mine) do have the same:
Flick the switch down or switch the wiper on and off in a short period of time (probably 1/2 wiper cycle) will get the relay into intermittant mode. The next flick or short on/off will deactivate it.
If you just want to do a single wipe hold the switch down until most of the cycle is performed, then intermittant will not be activated. The same obviously does work when the wiper is switched on and then off near the finish of the wipe cycle.
You need to find the point when it will go into intermittant mode or not, on my cars I need to nearly complete one wipe to get the car stay off intermittant mode...
The programmable things from later, better equipped cars is WAY better tbh...

The Mk1 set up that you describe is based on the age old BL twin stalk arrangement dating from the very early 70's to 1996 (when Mini's were fitted with R100 style stalks) which incorporated a flick wipe position. The intermittent wiper set up plugged in between wiper switch multiplug and socket and used the flick wipe position to activate/deactivate the intermittent mode. That means any Mini, Allegro, Maxi and others with this wiper switch set up can be retro-converted to intermittent wipe fairly easily. The washer was not linked to the wiper action. Later Maestros with the Montego style stalks still made use of this basic intermittent control for lower spec cars, but more up-spec models had the more sophisticated "Programmed wash/wipe" not unfortunately compatible with the earlier non modular stalks.
Hope that this makes sense...

Now, guess how one of my Maxis received a new feature in form of intermittent wipe some years back :D

If I wouldn't have leant my LE to a friends nephew, I could have been able to do a donation to the NHS... But as it is my old LE is still doing well :) (incl. intermittent wipe)

I notice with interest there is an HLE in the classifieds.
The write up is positive, the price also suggests the example is a good one.
Does anyone know anything about it?
