Evening all,
Apologies for joining up just to ask a stupid question, but I'm in need of some help. My *cough* 1991 VW Golf GTD *cough* is in need of a new gearbox, and upon reading a restoration manual, I gather that the Maestro & Montego sourced some of their boxes from VW.
Does anyone know how closely related their likely to be, as I'm currently limited to 4 gears at the moment for fear of grenading the 5th cog....
Cheers,
Tom

The Maestro diesel used a Honda designed PG1 gearbox completely different to the VW box and i cant think of any petrol ratios on the 1.3/1.6 VW boxes that would be suitable for your GTD.

The Maestro 'box, as Gareth says, on the 1.3/1.6 models, was of Volkswagen 020 type, and I wouldn't have thought that in any of it's fitments (to the Maestro) would have suitable ratios for use with your GTD, as they were (as I understand) basically of two types: in Volkswagen cars, they would effectively have been the 4+E box, and also (but much rarer) the close ratio 5spd box, as possibly fitted to the Golf GTi (although I am not 100% on this!)
Also, after looking in the Haynes manual for the petrol Golf II, I note there are two different types of transmission used, the 020 (on 1.6 and 1.8 only), and also the 084 (4 speed) and 085 (5 speed). I have a sneaking suspicion that there would be a point at which they went from the earlier 020 box, and switched to the (theroetically) later 084/5 box, which given the Golf II's production run (84-92), I would imagine it was before the 1991 build of your car.
I would have thought a scrap Passat would have been a better bet for you? I appreciate that that 1.6 diesel engine isn't the easiest thing to find these days, though.....
HTH,
Ricky.

Thank you gents for your swift responses. The VW code for the box I'm looking for is 4T and is a 020 rod-change type, also fitted to 1.6 petrol Jettas, but it seems to be quite a rare beast...
Thank you for clearing up the query about the Maestro diesel box's suitability. I shall continue my searching....
Thanks again,
Tom

Too much time & effort (and blood and swearing) have gone into the restoration of the Golf to give up on it now (although I was tempted when I got overtaken by the rear wheel 2 weeks ago).
Something to consider though when I finally lose my rag & take the angle grinder to it though :D
Cheers again,
Tom
