Been helping on a mate's car.
Changed the head gasket, manifold gasket, the thermostat and the water pump on a MG Maestro 2.0i
Seem to keep getting an air trap, as the radiator doesn't heat up. Manage to get the system working intermittently by filling all the pipes up with water, but the next time one starts the engine, back comes the problem.
The only thing I can think of is a warped head. If so, then here comes an engine change.:banghead:

Hi,
Have you got a coolant leak?
What was the origional problem that made you do all this work?
Have you got the tiny coolant hoses on the throttle body connected up correctly? It has been known for people to connect the breater hose and coolant pipes to the wrong pipes on the throttle body.

All pipes are correctly connected.
Original problem was a blown head gasket, but also had a leaking water pump.
Breakdown man broke the thermostat.
Coolant expansion tank gets hot and boils over, but the radiator is stone cold.
What ever we do to resolve the air trap, the problem comes back.:banghead:

Hi if there are no leaks anywhere (check heater matrix etc) and you are filling the coolant up slowly and with the heater on fully hot, then you should not get an air lock.
Other things that could be wrong are blocked radiator, the new water pump is faulty, or the head or block is warped or cracked or incorrectly torqued head bolts.

Rad Blocked , by the sounds of it..
garages use a oil cleaner , for parts.. this oily water substance , is a good flush ..
3 or 4 flushes will unblock you .

If the thermostat does not open, then the rad will not have water flowing through it, Check that it opens once the correct temp is met by placing it in a cup of hot water....
