Heres a little one to amuse you all. :)

The other day waiting in traffic in a well loved part of Hampshire, a lorry basically decided to push beside me in the next lane waiting at a roundabout.. unfortunately his lane narrowed on a bend, and he got just that little bit to close to me. Soon enough, a scraping noise is heard from the surrounding area.. and his back end of this truck is scraping against my drivers side wingmirrow bending it backwards... he didnt realise, and i didnt have any room to move, so i just watched as my mirror cracked, and being a VDP, the silver metal plate from the back bend and fall off, under his wheels! And that was that, basically it, my mirror is now severly cracked and the because the back sort of plate thing has been lost, the glass isnt secure.

So, today i made enquiries into getting a new one as i do not have any VDP mirrors as spared. I enquired through a local source and to my amazement a replacement would cost £150 inc VAT!! :banghead: Huge, major con artist seeking blackmailing swines! was my thought.. and then, they said they couldnt get hold of any. apparently nobody can!

So, what im going to do is glue up the damaged one and spray the back silver as a temporary "that looks ok" sort of measure. lol.

Anybody had the same experience? ITs fun, i'll give you that!

Yeah - I've had a very similar experience with my 1988 VP. I found out just how much it'd cost and then decided not to buy new!

Instead I went to the scrapper in search of a Maesty with electric heated mirrors (mk.2 VP, Mayfair, MG) and took one. Sadly the only Maestro they had was an MG to I had to buy the silver mirror cover from Rover (about £25 I think).

It's not too easy to remove the old mirror cover but it's only glued on so persevere and try not to crack the plastic!

Mirrors are the kind of thing that I'm thinking of taking a good stock of so that when there are no Maesties left in the srappers I'll still have spares!

Btw, Monty ones aren't compattible with the Maesty.

They are, but it takes a lot of dismantling and remantling to get the body from one mirror to mate to the end bit (the triangular black piece which is different between Maestro and Montego) of the other. It's a faff, but it can be done.

thank you all for your replies. I might have a go at making it look a bit better this weekend. Its not hanging off completely, but at some stage it could well do with a better looking, newer one.

I cant believe how pricey they are new! Makes you wonder what parts for Aston Martins cost!!! One of these days, hopefully i'll find out.. but yes, i know what you're all thinking.. I'll still have the old Maestro parked in the drive! Don't fret yourself!! ;)

Thanks again!

Aston martin are based just outside of Banbury,Oxon. I was putting some pipework in for them in the offices and workshops,i was told that i was to be extremely careful as even the slightest scuff to a front wing would mean a total respray to that part at a minimum price of £2500!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :censored: so i hate to think how much parts cost or if i had dropped any of my tools on one:rolleyes:
