Hi All,
I am hoping to get my failing starter motor storted this weekend. I am gonna go around a few scrappies, but i was wondering if the started motor on my E reg EFi will be the same as a 1.3/1.6?
Are they available from Halfrauds etc?
Any thoughts?

Just stick with the one for the O series to save any problems. W
hat exactly is wrong with your starter motor? I had a intermittant problem once on mine, turn it over, nothing happened. Turned out to be the spade connector on the starter solonoid had become loose due to age/fatigue and the solder had corroded and cracked. Took the starter off and cleaned it, re-soldered it, and the problem went away, and i did this over a year ago and done 30k miles since.
Worth a look, as i've seen a few starters that are showing the same problem and it could be fixed for nothing.

Hi Gareth,
When I try and start the engine, the starter motor makes a "buzzzzzz'ing" sound. I turn the ignition off and try again, ang it usually starts on the second attempt. But this week it has got worse. Last night, it took about 8-10 attempts to start.
Earlier this morning, went to a local scrappie, and bought one for £25. Brand new, I was quoted £99.00

Redmaestro asks if the EFi starter is the same as the 1.3/1.6.
A quick glance tells you it ain't. In all cases they fit into the gearbox bellhousing. In the case of the 1.3/1.6 the gearbox is VW, while all EFis have a Honda gearbox. On this basis alone it would be a miracle if the starters were interchangebale. Nothing is compatible, except the alternator and the oil switch. Unless of course you talking about a 1.6 with a Honda gearbox. If so, I don't know the answer.
You can usually get starters overhauled by Lucas or other similar specialists for about half the new price, depending on how bad they are inside. Your symptoms could be caused by a bad external connection, but it is likely that the motor will be worn out, so a repair/replacement would be advisable.

1989-on Montego 1.6s have a Honda 'box, but I'm not sure if the Maestro 1.6s from '89 did. Also I'm not sure if the 1.6 and 2.0 Honda Boxes are the same...
I paid £20 + £25 surcharge for a 1.6 Exchange Starter Motor at the end of 2000, off the shelf. Got the surcharge back later in the day... Shop around is my motto, and find somewhere you trust.

First things first, take it off, dissassemble it and clean it. You'd be amazed how many times that works. The inside is usually in a right state. clean it and see if that helps..
What sort of buzzing is it making anyway.. It the starter spinning but not engaging?
Or is it just clicking?
Either way a clean out of the motor and solenoid may do wonders and it is easy and cheap.

The brushes may be worn. When it doesn't work try belting it with a piece of wood, but not the solenoid just the motor.

All 1.6 Maestros had the VW box. Strange that they decided to change the one in the Monty but not the Maestro. The Honda boxes are much better.
Not sure if they are interchangeable between 1.6 and 2.0. I suspect not. Bellhousing almost certain to be different, but I am prepared to be corrected if somebody knows for sure. 1.6 has wider ratios, I do know this for certain.
