According to the wee booklet that came with the 1275 Maestro my front tyres should be 26 and the rear 28.

When I checked the other day (first time) they were all on 30, so I duly let air out and put in the correct pressures.

Since then the turning has been more sluggish and fuel consumption seems to have increased, this despite checking the pressures at other stations in case the original had a fault.

Put it all back to 30 today and the handling is much better.

But is this a dangerous thing to do?

Over-inflating tyres produces an effect whereby not all of the tyre's surface is in equal contact with the road: the centre will be more in contact than the edges because the tyre effective "baloons", which is probably why you'd find over-inflated tyres easier to turn at low speeds; not sure why 2psi would effect your mpg much though: I can't see the rolling-radius changing by very much
As for it being unsafe, depending on the tyre there could be a reduction in grip at speed or in the wet, because less of the tyres surface is gripping the road

anything less than 30 psi on any car will affect handling and turn in

32 f 30 r should be fine
