Can anybody tell me what size the front driveshaft nut is, it looks about 1.5" 40mm ?

I can't tell you exactly what size they are but you're in for a tough job getting them off.
I've removed both of mine just recently for a couple of jobs and I think it was the first time they'd been off in the cars life (13yrs and 120,000 miles)
Nightmare! I ended up drilling and chiseling them off after snapping a breaker bar (which had a six foot length of scafhold on the end of it)...
Be prepared and have a new nut to hand.
Phil
You did realise the nut is backward-threaded on the nearside of the car?!
I needed to remove mine after about 75k - not such high mileage, admittedly, but I don’t remember having any trouble.

2.0 are definately 32mm, and I think 1.3&1.6 are 30mm

I bought a 3/4 inch drive socket set, and they came off easily then (with a suitable lever!)

The front driveshaft nut is NOT handed. Only the rear hub nut is left-handed. It is 32mm for most.

hmmm, still doesn't explain why both sides were as tight as f**k (in my case any how)
The hub nut wasn't half as tight a the bearing was! now that job was a complete bitch
