Hi, does anyone know if a Montego Turbo (MG) gearbox will fit a Turbo Diesel engine?

I have been offered one brand new by my local rover dealer, and just want to make sure it will fit, I seem to recal the ratios are different?

Cheers, Rich

im almost certain it will be a straight fit although the ratios would be way out and would probrbly make driving very strange indeed. saying that. it would possibly give the TD a better 'top end'

From what I have learned since owning a turbo,(from people who have had them a while) you are better off keeping the original TD box due to the ratio's being more suited.

That being said, if you decide not to go for it, could you put me in contact with the dealer, or I could buy it from you with a little on top of you're purchase price.

i think you will find it the other way round the top end wont be as muchbut should be quicker on take off.
it will be a straight fit though,i once put a diesel box in my mg 2.0i and all the gears were a higher speed
50 out of first
90 out of second
115 out of 3rd
136 out of 4th(that was the car flat out)
5th gear was good cos instead of 70 at 3000 rpm i got 90 mph at 3000 rpm

i once baught an exhaust off a boy with a mg maestro turbo who had a diesel box fitted he reckoned he got over 160 mph out of his car.(he estemated his speed cos he passed his mate in his supra who was doing 160)

The only reason I have for fitting it, is so I don't have to clean the original box! The crankshaft oil seal had gone, and the bell housing is caked in crud, and the whole box looks black! Its hard to know how to go about cleaning it, as I don't want to much parrafin/de-greaser over it with the danger of it getting inside through the drive shaft holes!

This box for me would be a quick fix, reliable and clean. Performance does not come into as such, I would expect it to be quicker through the lower gears, but if it will be any good on a van I don't know.

I have been into this dealer many times, and have eventually got a name for myself. The guys cringe when I go in, as they end up getting all the microfiche out. However today, the parts manager was there, and he was asking me if I knew where to get parts from, as many people have been in there asking for parts they can no longer supply. Pointed him in the direction of M&MOC!

I asked if he had any NOS that he would be willing to sell. He mentioned the gearbox, and some panels he has knocking about. I could see through the piles of rover 25 panels, a promosing maestro bonnet, and what looked like a front crossmember. He's going to dig out all hes got for when I go back. Basically the same old story, its better going to people who are going to use it, then us ditching it.

Story of the gearbox is, one of the guys who had worked at the dealer, had a Monty Turbo, he suspected a problem with the gearbox, and ordered it in to replace it. He the found it was a clutch problem and then never used the box.

Therefore, they have 2 grands worth of gearbox collecting dust. He wants £150 for it, and I said I would pick it wedensday with my other parts they ordered for me. If a Turbo owner is in need of one I would consider selling it, and if it's going to be no good for my application, then it can certainly go to someone who needs it! Mal, your first on the list!
