Thinking of getting another maestro van (after mine got nicked) but i want power steering (pas)
is it costly to get it fitted and easy to find some one to do it. or does anyone know of any other cheap diesel van with PAS that is long enough to lie down in but not as big as a transit van ????
thanks

If it's a simple as the one on my montego turbo, I'd have thought it would be easy to take the full system off another maestro/montego diesel and swap it over to the van (assuming you can't get it as standard).

There are a number of people on here who have retrofitted PAS to various cars. You could investigate finding a donor car and removing all the PAS parts and attaching them to another vehicle. I can't imagine it is too difficult to do once you have found all the bits you need.

yeah you certainly don't need another engine...PAS is a separate component altogether consisting fundamentally of the PAS steering-rack and pump.

all cars had power steering (ex the 1.3) so as long as you find a car with the same type of engine as your own , you have everything you need to convert yours .
i have done(or helped with) a 2L efi and a diesel van, so it can be done .

Its easy to do!

I put PAS on my 500 City van, and the 700L.

Simply, you need the pullys, tensioner, pump and bits from a doner car, these all fit onto the end of the engine where you have a plastic blank plate next to the air filter. The pump locates in the hole in the gearbox adapter plate at the front of the engine.

There are two sets of pipes, these go from the pump, around the sump (the mounting points are already welded to the sump) to the rack, then back from the rack, around the sump, to the PAS oil cooler which is held under the front crossmember and back to the pump.

The rack consists of the union to the steering column (the unions differ between pas and non pas) 4 bolts and the tie rod ends. Simply release the tie rod ends and the 4 bolts and union from inside, remove the rack from the drivers side wheel arch.

Refitting is reverse of removal, however, its a bugger to get the PAS rack in. The pipes on the rack make it bigger to get through the gaps behind the engine, and the exhaust downpipe gets in the way. You will have to drop the hub from the shock absorber, then remove the bolts in the lower arm so it will swing down out the way. The rack will then glide in!

Fit a new belt, fill with oil and the system self bleeds by turning the steering from lock to lock, refilling, turning and so on. Only other thing is after this, the tracking will need to be re-set, but any tyre place can do this.

Its easy really, but I have done it 3 times now.....

Well, I think you would be hard pushed to find a van with PAS which hasn't been put on by a previous owner. It was not available on vans as standad, or as an option when they were new.

I would not like to hazard a guess what a garage may charge to fit it, but in your case I would say its harder to get the parts, as this would normally involve stipping it out of a scrapped car. I can't remember the website, but the forum which the land rover converters use can sometimes be useful. When they scrap a maestro/montego for the TD engine, they nearly always have no use for the PAS setup. Therefore, you can get lucky and buy the full set of someone who does not need it.

I'm sure someone on here can give you the website for them.

Apart from that, you would have to get some quotes from garages etc.

Firsty you'll be lucky to find a garage to take your request seriously - much the same attitude as getting a quote for a body restoration on a Monty or Maestro.
Secondly any quote you get is likely to be way over the actual value of the vehicle; I'd say a ballpark figure would be at least 300 quid based on 6 hours at 50 an hour. But you won't know until you ask around...
