I am the owner of a 1989 'F' Reg Maestro Special. I acquired from a family friend who was retiring to the caribbean in June this year. He had for a couple of years. It has only had 3 owners from new, including myself. The body is in superior condition for its age.

However, in the last couple of weeks it takes a while to start and shuts off unexpectedly. It has been checked by several mechanics and they all agree that the fault lies in the distributor and can easily be fixed. However, I would prefer to put it to better use by giving it to those who could benefit from the parts.

The reason that I am contacting you is because I know members of your club might be interested in the parts which I have come to realise are quite scarce. It has many new parts such as:

* Distributor caps
* Rotor arm
* Ignition Module
* Ignition Coil
* Spark plugs
* Oil Filter
* Air filter
* Headlining

If you are interested please give me a call ASAP as I am also considering scrapping it if no one is interested. My contact numbers are: 07949 086 984/07932 964 507.

Thank you very much and hope to hear from you soon.

Yours sincerely

Janice (London, England)

Ah, so you got that email too? I hope someone saves it, because it sounds much too good to break for the sake of a part that should still be readily available.

Yeah, even though I try to pretend that I wish death to all Maestro Specials, this car actually sounds like it's on the verge of being scrapped for the sake of about a tenner.

Surely someone wants a Special that's not got a lot wrong with it...?

I must be missing something here. When the first mechanic diagnosed this simple fault, why did he/she not repair it? And why did it then go to a second and third (maybe more) mechanics to receive the same diagnosos. Unless they work for free - even three lots of 1/2 hour labour would have paid for the repair.

Hmmm, seeing as my 1.3L is being a real pain in the posterior, maybe I should try a super-basic Special instead...

Perhaps, each garage has told Janice that 'old maestro parts are difficult and costly to get hold of love' :(

More likely that they don't know what to do with something as old fangled as a distributor! "You mean I can't plug my laptop into it?"
