View Full Version : Front Wheel Bearing (I'm losing mine now)

Well, BL Day is approaching quickly and my noisy wheel-bearing is becoming even more so each day. I need to get this sorted before Saturday, but here is my problem...
I went to MotorWorld to ask about a ordering a wheel-bearing - after looking through the book to find none listed, the lad phoned the supplier and said it only comes as a complete hub - £40. With this in mind I went to my local spares shop and bought a one-piece bearing instead, there and then - £15.
Though on asking my local garage about drifting in the new bearing for me I found it would be much cheaper to buy and install the complete hub, as stated by MotorWorld. So this I did, after returning the £15 bearing.
When the part arrived at MotorWorld I found it was just the bearing, exactly the same as the one I had bought for £15 but priced at £50! Telling them this, they then ordered me a hub (without bearing as they now say) instead. I then went back and bought again, the £15 bearing. I've just gone to collect the hub which was ordered and it is the inner hub, which the road wheel bolts onto.
:banghead:
I've now found that a one-piece bearing cannot replace the existing two-piece bearing so I am left in a rather frustrating mess.
I cannot get hold of an outer hub for the one-piece bearing to go into - I thought this is the part that would be ordered for me!
Am I going to have to return this one-piece bearing for the second time and buy the two-piece? I believe it is easier to install such bearings so I could do it myself...
Anyone got any ideas? I've got just three days before I make the 300 mile round trip for BL Day...
TIA :(

Suggestion. Return your item to ChavWorld, get a refund and take your business elsewhere.
How do you know the one piece bearing can not replace the two peace bearing? As far as I knew they were interchangeable.

The bearings are not interchangeable.
The chav shop should have been able to supply you with the correct bearing according to year, why you had to buy a hub as well i do not know but fact remains if you didnt know what type of hub you had and neither did the shop your not going to get very far.
Take hub and bearing back, get wheel bearing for an 83-86 car, job done. Dont expect it to last though unless you get genuine parts.

Indeed they are not interchangable parts.
The idea was to get a hub which could carry a one-piece bearing. Though because I now have the inner and not the outer hub, I don't have the ability to install the one-piece bearing I have.
It would appear I need to return the one-piece bearing for the second time and install a two-piece kit into the original hub then put the new hub/flange on as well.

IIRC you can swap the hubs but the bearings themselves can not be swopped between early and late hubs.

I'm sure you can replace the bearing yourself Steve and save on employing a garage to do the job.
We replaced both front bearings in 'Nellie' and I don't recall having any great difficulty?

You seem to have two Maestro's listed as part of your collection Sport, why don't you take the hub off the one you're not using and put it on the one you want to use. Then sort the hub out at your convenience, ie. in your own time and not have to flap around.

or just say to a garage.. i need this for thursday night / early friday.. can you do this and this please.. then your hassel free , with no responability..
...Ok , im a mechanic , and do my own work , therefore dont pay my own labour charge to fit my parts.. but what . 1 hours labour , at £40.00 + VAT .. ? + the £15 bearing.. ? £80 tops.. no hassle..
or alternately , get both baring kits home.. and have a casual bearing party.. over a few drinks.. then refund on the other non used baring?

Graham - I bought the bearing for £15, the inner hub at £35 and I am going to need to pay out for petrol to get to Peterborough and back at weekend - at £40 per hour as I was quoted, I just cannot afford to have it done for me.
Henry, I did think about doing that myself. It will be the last resort.

Changed the O/S/F bearing today. Descovered it was a two-piece bearing set so went and got a new one (the right part this time) this morning. It was a fairly easy job, really.
I took the car for a death drive when complete...
The other side is rumbling. :banghead: :censored:

But is the rumbling bearing worn and loose, or just noisy?
I ask this because bearing noise is a symptom caused as much by age as wear in older maestro's.
I replaced both front bearings in nellie, not because of wear but because of noise.

I wouldn't like to send my car to your garage, if that's your diagnosis... :suspect:
As Rich says, when the rumbling is at the front of the car and one of those two bearings are new, it isn't that hard to work out which is the one still at fault.

Graham, I'm not an imbecile. I did check where the noise was coming from and considering both bearings were shot, it was generally the front of the car. I changed the O/S one first as there was quite a bit of play in the wheel - you know?
Anyway - I've changed the bearing on the other side (N/S) today and the car now drives like a dream. :p

Ah, but have you thought where the noise might be coming from next?

The noise that came from the front of my Ledbury (anyone remember its death rattle!?) turned out to be a rear bearing...
