I wonder if anyone knows if there's any difference between the wiper/ indicator stalks on the Monty and Maestro. I've looked them up on the EPC and they have different part numbers but that doesn't necessarily mean that they are different.

When I was talking to the guy who has got them they sounded correct i.e. there were optical fibres comming out of them and there was the thumb wheel to alter the speed of intermittant wipe but it's not unknown for the Monty to have the same parts with different plugs on them. One example being the electric window regulators.

Anyone know for sure?

Only last week i got an indicator stalk from a montego estate in the scrappy for my maestro, plugs were the same and it works fine. But I think there are different types of stalk caus my dads k reg maestro doesn't have that slide thing to adjust the wiper speed or any fibre optic things but as long you get one with the same switch setup then i don't see why it wouldn't work.

Essentially the two models are the same. There are so many detail differences that it's not possible to make general statements, but if a switch off one car looks like the equivalent switch off the other, then it is almost certainly the same. The parts differences are more to do with age or spec than model differences.

Clearly there are major differences in the fact that later EFi Montegos had a different management system, and later 1.6s had a Honda gearbox, but apart from that most other parts are, if not identical, then at least interchangeable. For example, you could take a power steering system off any Maestro or Montego and fit it, lock, stock and barrel, on to the other model, assuming the engine is the same type and has the necessary mounting lugs on the block. You just need to get everything off the donor car, so that it's all compatible.

Same applies to wiper systems. You could transfer the whole system off one model into the other, or maybe odd bits, depending on the exact spec.

Even complete dashboard assemblies could be transferred, if you had a good enough reason to do so. You might need to change the whole wiring harness too, but it is possible, because the cars are all, at the end of the day, basically the same bodyshells.

I hope this doesn't cause more confusion than it answers.

Derek.
