Have any of you guys fitted an immobiliser to a maestro. How hard is it to do and do you have any recommendations for type etc. I am fairly competant and just wondered if it is something that I could tackle as I lost my dads maestro to toerag thieves. Have got a steering stop lock but would prefer an immobilser too.

Cheers

Hi Nath. The first thing I (and quite a few others) would recommend is shelling out to get yourself a Disclock if you haven't already done so. These cover the whole steering wheel and are much more secure than the standard type of lock.

Secondly, a popular immobilisation technique on Maestros is to take a lead off the -ve end of the coil into the cockpit and have a hidden cut off switch - this makes it impossible for the vehicle to be started without the switch being flicked. This is a cheap but effective way of ensuring your car won't be going anywhere :)

or fit a set of complicated switches....

my 3rd to last car.. you had to...

Turn the key fullly , flick the big red nos swtich , and press a button.. just to start ..

theres a red and white wite striped , in your sterring collum.. cut it and put a few swiches in , "in paralelle" at this point... + re join it..

why would you want to wire any extra switches up in parallel? this would mean you only had to switch one of them to get power...... you would wire them up in series, so you had to switch them all to get power.

on a more usefull note; I can definitely agree with Chris about Disk locks, £70 well spent....

and it's well worth hiding 1 extra switch in the car, I say one because if you hide it well its just as efective as 2 or 3, and you've got less messing about yourself and less extra connections to go wrong. don't put the extra switch in the starter circuit though, because this will mean the car will still bump start, put it in the coil circuit for a petrol or the fuel pump circuit for a diesel..... this will leave the starter to work if they're hot wiring it, they will draw attention to themselves when it wont start and if they try for long enough, they will just flatten the battery and leave it
