View Full Version : Interior Lights playing up

Now I've bought my MGF mirror I have to fix the fault that I've been ignoring with the interior lights.

The situation is this:

The light units have three switch positions as I'm sure you're aware:

1: Always on
2: Always off
3: Door Operated.

The fault is only apparent when in position 3. When the door(s) open, both lights come on correctly. Shut all doors and the Driver's side lamp goes out, passenger's stays on. After about 15 seconds (when both lamps should go out) the driver's light comes back on and both lights shine at about half brightness and won't switch off.

I'm going to get a multimeter on it tomorrow but if anyone has a quick fix it'd save a lit of head scratching! :)

i think the switch makes the earth, so it sounds to me like one is making earth when it shouldnt be, try new switches and it might sort it.

have you tryed changing the relay for the delay for the intera lights?
does that make sense

Just about to suggest that one!! Yes, pull the yellow relay unit from inside the fusebox. The inteior lights are designed so that they can still operate when this is removed. I upgraded my interior light dimming system by adding a combined delay unit/lights on buzzer from a top spec Montego, and rewiring the relay socket to suit. Not that difficult either!

As you say, you need to go around with the multimeter and a wiring diagram, checking the presence of voltage and also continuity. Check to ensure that everything is wired up correctly inside the interior light units.

Thanks for your replies Gentlemen.

I did as Tony suggested and removed the delay so that the lights simply switched on and off but the problem was still there. I then swapped the light units with a couple of spares but to no avail.

The answer was blindingly obvious in the end - when I changed the headlining, I marked which wires went to which connections on the lamp units so surely I couldn't have put them back wrongly? Well, I hadn't, according to the labels, but it turns out that I hadn't labled them correctly in the first place!

I swapped a purple wire with a black one on the Driver's side and it all worked again. What an idiot .

Anyway, I can now make up a small adaptor with spade fittings to attach my new MGF mirror (thanks for the info Simon!) to the Maestro wiring.

Hurrah!
