Fitted a replacement LW/MW stero cassette to my VP this morning, cracking sound, even the tape works properly!

The problem starts when you run the engine or operate anything electrical! The sound goes and all you can hear is interferance. Is it possible to fit a supressor just to the radio instead of supressing everything on the car?

Yep. You could buy them over-the-counter when MW/LW radios were common, not sure about now though  Perhaps someone has one they could sell/give?

Have you tried Maplins?

Something like this
http://cpc.farnell.com/jsp/endecaSearch/searchPage2.jsp?Ntt=cp03285&Nty=1&N=411&Ntk=gensearch
fits inline between unit and power supply, otherwise check the supressor chokes on the alternator or coil, if missing or knackered then replace these. Pop down to Halfords, that's possibly the easiest way.

Glad to hear you've sorted that Dean.

I was just looking at radio/cassette units myself, I'm looking into fitting an orginal-looking unit with a CD changer of sorts. Does anyone know if the wiring adaptors are still available for connecting the head unit to the existing (original!) Maestro wiring? Or does anyone have one going spare? (so to speak)

Steve, I'm sure Halfords do the conversion harness plug thingy you speak of, I'll have a look when I pop in there next, which should be today (Thursday) or tomorrow, but I know they werent cheap, you're probably looking at a good £15 or so.....

Does make it a bit easier though!:)

You can get the cable/adaptor thingy (specifically a DIN to ISO adaptor) from the Bay of Flea for norra lorra money - quite possibly under a fiver.

For an original looking radio cassette with CD changer capability look out for a Philips (Rover) R860 or 960 coupled with a Philips DC082 changer, or a any other Philips head unit with the pefix 22RC... and the D2B symbol, indicating that it can control a digital data bus CD changer of the RC026/27 type (often encountered in MGF's). Or use a retro head unit and fit an FM modulator CD changer. Or do what I did and fit a CD MP3 player.
