View Full Version : Who else owns a DLX?

Just wondering who else (if anybody) on the forum owns a Maestro DLX or am I the only one?
I've noticed that I don't seem to see many others about on the road, or in the breakers. maybe they are becoming rare? Would be interesting to see how many were made in relation to petrol versions.
I've included a poll, to see how many diesel owners there are to see what sort of company i've got here!
Cheers

It has a Ford engine - I spit on the V8.

Okay - it may have a Ford engine, but surely you can overlook that part. It is still a fantastic looking car!
I'd have one!

It does look great. To be honest, I would have one as well - it would have to be the faster (turbo?) version they are releasing a few months down the line with a top speed of about 180mph!

My van had a 1.6l S series with twin webber carbs, and now sourcing a Honda V6
A freind said I should fit a V8, but that would mean cutting the chassis - not my thing!

Depends how you drive them. My turbo D is such fun on winding country roads especially with the alloys on but take it on the motorway and it's hard work to make it move(quick for a diesel of its era, however). I forced a 1.4 esc**t into the middle lane of the M6 the other day when he was caning it at 90 so it's not too bad! The turbo on the diesel engine is great for extra overtaking 'kick' as well.
Had a scrap '87 1.6 VDP two years ago (had interior out of it) and drove it around home and it was a little bit quicker off the mark than my TD - tyres screeched on acceleration from 20 - 35 mph, second gear! Something I would not wish to expect of or try out on my TD!

I wanted a DLX, but could I find one when I was looking for the first Maestro back in 1999. Well I found one which was a 10k rust bucket, it was really rotten, and the interior was filthy. 1.3 was the next option, and H902 couldnt be turned away, so thats what happend, although a DLX or TDLX is somthing I would still like, and I had thought of converting H902, but have just bought a brand new engine for him for £100 so thats that plan gone!

Not as good as 60mpg day to day and nearly 70mpg on a run...

My TD is fantastic! Slow off the mark unless you rev it to get it past the lag, its actually quite quick, as the Astra SXi driver found out the other day! At night-time, i'd even go as far to say that's its not far off an Efi Maestro or Montego. The torque and BHP is definatly much higher than the 80bhp/120lb ft figures i've seen, more like 90-95bhp and torque is better than an Efi, prob about 140-145lb ft. Above 70mph in 5th it gets a move on. I'll never go back to gutless petrol engines now unless its turbocharged

My car's performance and economy returns are more to do with the way that I drive it, ie just like grandad. I'm thinking of installing a new go faster mod though: one of those round tins of travel sweets, oh yes and a travel blanket. Mmmm, nice and comfy.
