The MG 'M' Group is busy planning MG Saloon Day 2006 and there is now a page on the club's website - www.mgcars.org.uk/mgm - which provides information about the event. Just click on the link to 'More Details' on the main homepage.
This year you can prebook your ticket for just £6 per car including driver and all passengers. The form for pre-booking is at the bottom of the info page. If you pre-book you will be sent an entry pass to display in your windscreen which will speed up your entry into the show.

Pre-paid attendees also are able to enter the show before the official opening time.

The venues just keep getting further and further away from from me :( There will be no G51 attendance this year: the 355-mile return trip in one day would be nothing short of masochistic lunacy.

This year's venue is about a ten minute drive from Stanford Hall (last year's venue) and close to the M1 so easy to get to for lots of people. It is a tricky one to pick a venue that is convenient to everyone.

It's an extra 25 miles (50 miles return) that makes the journey breach what I consider to be a reasonable daily travelling distance: you've got to draw the line somewhere. Though I accept it's in your best interests to hold the venue within reasonable travelling distance of the majority of your members whom, let's face it, generally live somewhere south east of Birmingham.
matthewsemple

... your members whom, let's face it, generally live somewhere south east of Birmingham.
Looking at the membership list, I would say that was incorrect. MG 'M' Group members live all over the country and abroad with concentrated numbers in the South West, North East and the West Midlands.
A location in the Midlands is chosen to allow maximum numbers to attend without travelling too far - but unfortunately no venue is going to be within reasonable travelling distance of everyone.
G51 NAV
21st May 2006, 09:10
If MGM does have a lot of members north of Birmingham (you mentioned you had "concentrated numbers" in the north east for starters) do you reckon there would be any mileage in having a second event further North, based in say central Yorkshire, for the benefit of those members?
matthewsemple
21st May 2006, 09:36
Yes, the club is having a stand at the MGOC event in East Yorkshire the week after MG Saloon Day to cater for the members in the North East. Details are on the club's website in the Events Calendar. You'd be more than welcome to attend.
Having a second event that the club wholly organise would only be possible if a group of enthusiasts in that area were to organise one like the annual event organised by the MGM's South West Area Group.

Apart from generic local rallies that offer a look at many types of cars (plus usually commercial vehicles/trucks/steam) but have very limited Club presences, there isn't really much option but to travel to get to the big car shows - the type where large numbers turn up and can be a focus for Owners Clubs.
I know a lot of planning and finance is needed to organise a large car show such as MGSD, to have more than one - apart from causing more hassle to organise - might cause people to miss the 'main' event and go to one closer to home - and as such less cars and people actually turn up to these events. I think the idea with MGSD is that it is the event for MG enthusiasts to get together each year. That is most likely to happen with a nice central location such as the Midlands.
It doesn’t mean that there will never be any event further north - see Matt's reply above. Take the M&MOC’s ‘Great North Run’ too, okay it’s not a car show (yet) but it offers a chance for enthusiasts north of Birmingham to get together, and what’s more the location changes every year too. It’s a successful event and now in its fourth year.

That's a good way of looking at it, Rich. I also think that travelling long-ish distances to shows is part of the fun of them! I like travelling to different parts of the country that I wouldn't normally see, in convoy with a load of Maestros and Montegos!

I agree in that the travelling down is part of the fun. However, having done a trip a little past Northampton and back in one day, I found it's quite a drag. This is why I will be only attending the BL/BMC Day this year, as camping will spread it out over the weekend. I'm also thinking of the car's sake.
I travelled down to Birmingham alone a few weeks back which I have to say was fun. I would also have gone to Gaydon today had the weather not been poor.
However as John mentioned, I have to draw the line somewhere and for me the amount of long trips is also considered.

However as John mentioned, I have to draw the line somewhere and for me the amount of long trips is also considered.
Yeah for me I draw the line when the expected travelling time is longer than the duration of the event I'm going to. I have enough of that through work: last week I had to attend a three-hour meeting in Bath and because of roadworks and traffic jams the combined return travelling time was TEN HOURS. Thankfully this was broken up via an overnight stay.

Long trips don't bother me particularly, unless the traffic is shockingly bad... 'Nipped' to Crewe and back this afternoon, didn't think anything of it.
I'm also thinking of the car's sake.
Not really too sure what you mean by that one Steve - the cars are designed to be driven! I could understand it if you had a mint 5k mile car, but GGT has done a lot more than that and hasn't done it any harm!
I will be coming to the MG Saloon Day 2006 this year due to me been very keen in seeing a maestro turbo again and the cars that will be on show at the event. But considering I haven’t been on a journey over 30 miles before I am not looking forward to the journey, looking at multimap again its 185.9 miles each way. I would like someone to explain what is fun about driving on a motorway for 185 miles there and back in the same day but never mind. It would be good if some one could organise an event in the northeast somewhere to reduce travelling for some people. When the date get closer id like some questions answered like where to put the car and is there any food stall etc.

Andy,
MMOC have a stand at the show.
Yes, there is a local pub that sells food in walking distance from the event.
The railway also has food, again walking distance from the event.
At the gate, when you pay for the entry, if you state which club / forum you are from you will be directed to that club's / forum's allocated area.

Andy - M&MOC also organise camping for you to stay over the night before, and this is always a great event in itself :D
As for driving that sort of distance, there really is nothing to it once you are used to it. Have you had any motorway lessons? If not, I strongly suggest you do before you attempt such a journey.

Because you are a relatively new driver who has not yet driven over 30 miles in one go- I can understand that the long journey may appear daunting Andy.
I would suggest you get as much practise as possible between now and then, especially on motorways; and don't rush your trip down to the MG saloon day.
Plan it so you won't be in a hurry, split the journey by allowing time for stops at services. This way the journey will be more relaxing and won't feel as long :)

There is camping booked the night before MG Saloon Day, as usual. Details in Monstro - and on a relevant thread on here when Monstro comes out.
This year's venue (The Northampton and Lamport Railway) is just past Stanford Hall - come off the M1 at J18 and follow the A428 in towards Northampton, hanging a left for the last few miles - probably only 10 or 15 minutes further than Stanford Hall if heading from the North :) .
The long journey is indeed part of the fun - just take it easy and enjoy it (or it will drive you mad  ). I'd go with what other people say and get some motorway lessons (or even do Pass Plus, which will save a new driver money on Insurance Premiums as well as teaching one little tricks that could just save one's life) if one has never had a motorway or 'high speed driving' lesson or never driven more than a few miles locally.
I'm camping Sunday night too, making a weekend of it.

Classic!
In getting plenty of practice and building up confidence you will, as a car enthusiast, gradually begin to enjoy driving for driving's sake. I love to drive and will within reason, drive anywhere and feel that extra element of enjoyment by driving in a Maestro, not just any random car.

I don't understand - how can you possibly be a petrolhead and not simply love driving - anything, anywhere. Within a month of passing my test I had driven to Istanbul in Turkey and back with my father, about 1850 miles each way. This was a good few years ago now - much less traffic then, but not a single motorway either. The roads through Yugoslavia and Bulgaria were simply 'challenging' but the experience was terrific.

Well there you go then, they are not straight boring roads at which you have to sit on at 70mph for hours on end watching the same boring view buring a hell of a lot of monies worth of petrel. I do enjoy driving a great deal on country roads in the sun, especial if it’s on the way to the river or something fun. I am a petrelhead and love admiring cars, just see no fun in motorways/duel carriage ways at all, just my view every one to there own.

That had me thrown too... Does that mean only having 11k On the clock of Ella , that i could turn up to shows in a nova? *gets coat*
Well, not really... Considering it has show car potential and you live about as far away from the official Club events as I could wazz. You'd have a Nova as an every-day car. I'm sure you have a knack of getting most things completely backwards.
But considering I haven’t been on a journey over 30 miles before I am not looking forward to the journey, looking at multimap again its 185.9 miles each way.
How long have you been driving? I travelled to Birmingham and back on my own in my 17 year old, 94k mile Maestro 1.3 within not three months of me driving - it was good fun, too. There must be something wrong with you if you wouldn't like driving in a relatively new, low mileage Rover 25. Thought you were here as you were into cars?

Exactly, I just love to get behind the wheel of my Maestro as it's so much fun. I'd be a miserable sod though if I had such as a Corpsa or equivalent 'teenagers car.'
Not really too sure what you mean by that one Steve - the cars are designed to be driven! I could understand it if you had a mint 5k mile car, but GGT has done a lot more than that and hasn't done it any harm!
It is for exactly that reason that I am concerned about the life of my car. Sure it has done good mileage and appears in good health despite this, but there must come a time when this should be respected and the car not used for such trips. I'm keeping my car long-term so why just abuse it?
As I've said in a previous post - I am looking forward to attending the Peterborough event and one or two others but with MG Saloon Day being fairly low on my list I'm not too sure if I will attend, taking into consideration the points made above.

Since August last year. I like driving my car, where had this idea come from that I don’t? I just haven’t been on long journey before as from August to now everywhere I have been has been close to home as Darlington is close to everything and there is plenty to do in a close vicinity, as it happens every time I have been in a long journey its been in a friends car (no point 5 people going in 5 cars when you can get in one) or a plane or train. I have always liked cars, always read about cars, always wish to own lots of cars but don’t see the point in driving about if there no where to go. Could spend that money on other things. Come to think of it the only place I plan to go this year more than 30 miles is to the m+m saloon show, what’s wrong with that?

Motorways and dual carriageways are not boring. Well, they can be - your call. Boredom is an admission of a lack of inner resources ;) .
If all is quiet, put some music on and chill out  . Most times, you've got to have your wits about you though... and boring it is not (play a game to place a bet on which driver around you is going to make a fool of him/herself next, for example).
It's fun to chill out in the inside lane and look at the countryside around you though :) . Much of the UK is very pleasant, especially when it's a clear day.
I drove to Naples and back in a week last September - the relaxed 450 miles-in-a-day jaunt across France on the way back (300 plus miles 'N-roads' and then 110 miles on Autoroute) was a lot more relaxing than the all-out thrash to Switzerland the week before (680 miles in a day, shared driving on the way out, all Autoroute) - and it was worth it for the sights, smells and 'french experience'.
As far as comments that cars with higher mileages 'are not there to be abused'... well :banghead: ! Just drive gently, savour the sights of the journey, and look forward to getting to your destination - a steady 70 indicated is an easy journey, and doesn't take much longer than a mad dash.
Cars are made to be driven, not to stand still - keeping them still brings on stiffness, not unlike in humans  .

We are, once again, camping at lodge farm (http://www.lodgefarm.com/campsite/) which is by the village of Long Lawford on the A428 to the West of Rugby. It's around 18 miles from the venue - should be a pleasant drive in.
We have reserved space for 4 tents and 2 Maestro Campers - so we have flexibility for more tents and less Campers if needed.
There will be a BBQ as well.

Well, this all happened when the car was in for it's MOT, the tester said "it's going well mate, but found something serious". He showed me how the N/S subframe mounting had come away from the body. At least I found out what my mysterous knocking sound was  The tester said it isn't going to be a cheap job and that I should get it to a garage ASAP. Managed to get car home, very, very slowly.
I'm off to my local garage later to get a price and to assess what i'm going to do. I fear that I may have to sell one of my kidneys to pay the bill

The thing that finished the engine off was the trailer and 13 wheels and tyres and pulling them about 20miles lol.
