Hi all,
Is there a MG METRO TURBO forum anywhere please.
And/or can anybody help me with a tune up, and advice on what petrol to put in my “NEW” MG Metro Turbo. :)
Kind regards
Malc in Oxford
P.S. I have just filled/topped up (around 13 liters) with the cheaper unleaded petrol ?. :(

Hi, and welcome, The later metro turbos were unleaded compatible, engines with the prefix 12HE onwards thats usually late F reg onwards roughly.
What sort of advice would you like as there are quite a few MG Metro owners on here.
Regards Gary :)

Hello .. I have 5 Metro Turbos ;)
Even my very late G reg is a leaded car.. If its not a HE engine you need to be running super unleaded and an octane booster or they run like a bag of spanners particularly on crap fuel.. What else do you want to know about them ..
Give us some details on you car, do you have any pics ?
Other usefull places for Metro info
www.metropower.co.uk ... Lots of boy racers on there but lots of good info too .. Iam on there also
www.triple-m.co.uk Again lots of Metro owners and quite a few with Metro Turbos.. You will find me on there too under the same name ..
I am a Metro addict and have 12 of them in total  :D

Thanks Gary,
My Turbo is a 1989/G reg and in the boot I found a bottle of Castrol lead replacement petrol additive, and as the log book has been sent off I don’t know which engine it is. (I’m hopeless :o at looking for any numbers on the engine)
Also it runs on, :( when I turn off, and I think it needs tuning up to get the best possible performance from a car like this. :)
It has been looked after with only 2 owners, and has done only 72,345 miles with stamped history up to 58,000.
Thanks again

The engine number is to the left hand side looking from the front of the car and its on a plate riveted to the engine block .. If you look for the Thermostat housing on the cylinder head and then look down to the engine block you will see it.
I would say on a G it will be leaded like mine .. Also the additive in the boot suggests it too

Hi, running on when turned off can be a few things but it's usually due to the idle speed set too fast.
As for rough running if you post an accurate description of the symptoms in as much detail as you can, someone will try help you diagnose the problem.
Cheers Gary :)

Hi yes that is it. You have a leaded petrol engine so you need to use an additive.
Running on will occur if the engine is set at 1000rpm tick over set to 800rpm.
For sluggish pulling away first thing to do is top up the carb damper.
check you are getting full throttle
Then check for blockages and leaks in vacuum hoses and engine breather hoses. check air filter and ignition componants are in good order check spark plug gap settings are correct 0.35in. check valve clearances are set to 0.013in.
Check and set ignition timing, 9 degrees btdc @ 1500rpm vac hose disconnected. Check distributor vacuum unit diaphragm is ok.
If you have access to a gas analyser set CO to 2% - 2.5%
Lubricate the choke fast idle cam with copper grease or similar align the arrow on the cam with the centre of the setting screw and set the engine speed to 1100rpm with the setting screw.
Reset idle to 800rpm and see how you go
Cheers gary :)

No Metro Turbo left the factory unleaded compatible, and they need at least 98 octane petrol regardless of hardened seats being fitted. They have a very high static compression ratio for a turbo charged engine, and they run very close to the limit of detonation.

Not a forum but a club - the MG 'M' Group caters specifically for MG versions of the Metro, Maestro and Montego. Here is the website address: www.mgcars.org.uk/mgm/
Lots of information there on activities that you can do offline with your MG Metro Turbo.
