ok heres a stupid question.... doing head on jeff the diesel at the week end.Instead of searching for a cam retaining tool, can i just chop off the cam cover from the wrecked head and use the end bit? The spare head has been over hauled( skimmed decoke valves lapped in new seals) all thats left is to set the valve clearances....can any one see any problems?

Done the same for my head, cut an old cam cover in three, both ends and the middle. Used an angle grinder to make the job easy, a simple solution. Trouble is if you need to shim up or down, shims come in packs of ten I think and must be worth their weight in gold. And of course you need an micrometer and to make it very easy, a spreadsheet to work out the gap/shim needed.
