I have just exchanged the cylinder head on my 1986 Maestro city x with an unleaded head from a 1989 car and wish to know if I need to set both exhaust and inlet valve clearance to '0.014 in'
I would also like to know if it is advisable to set the exhaust clearance on the loose side or even set to '0.015 in' on an unleaded head to keep the valves cool.
I have looked in the Haynes manual and noticed that the HLE models are set to '0.013 in' could any one tell me the difference between the models.
I know the above may appear obvious but this is my first engine rebuild and I hope to get it right.

Hi , you will find the engine will run smoothest and give the best exhaust emissions set at an easy .014in. The HLE has a higher compression and different milder camshaft hence the slight variation in setting.

Cheers Gary :)

Thanks Gary for the clarification. I will now go ahead and set up the clearances and hope the car passes the MOT next week.
