View Full Version : Rear Wheel Bearing

Well I did the hard bit, the remnants of the old bearing practically fell out. I've got both inner and outer new bearings in as far as they seem to go, but the spacer is still slightly loose, maybe 1-2 mm. I thought a spacer was meant to keep two halves apart? If both halves of my new bearing are up to the shoulders why have a spacer? I'm suspicious that they need another push, though with the wheel back on the car it seems solid enough,

Hi mate, had this problem myself when I did mine a few weeks ago and found that I'd installed one of the bearings in the wrong way round as they were grinding when going round corners because the bearings were tight against the spacer, when correct there should be some play in the spacer when it's in and no I couldn't work out what the spacer's purpose was for either cos when the nut is tight theres nothing to move anyway.
HTH Paul :)

Thanks Paul.
"What's a spacer between two hard shoulders?"
Something that Austin Rover gave us in case we need it...........

Yeah, with massive alloy rims with rubber bands wrapped around them, lowered so the floorpan sparks off road humps and a garish bodykit! Most of them around here are driven by 17 year olds. You know, baseball caps on backwards, Eminem (Doo doo be doodoo!) thumping out through the 12 inch subwoofers. Because of this, their only engine mods are those huge bore exhaust back boxes which give them the sound - and presumably the power - of a fart in a tin kettle!  Oh how I want a V6 lump for my van!
Any way, back to the subject, I've just removed the rear axle in my renovation work and I'm wondering how easy it is to remove the stub axles? It's taking a fair bit of hammering to do and they seem to be stuck by the locating bosses. How deep are said bosses, or should I just keep hammering?:(

Hi ATV,
The depth of the boss/lip if the stub axle into the axle tube is approx. 2-4mm.
Put the castle nut back on the stub and hit it (gently at first!) from different angles- side to side & top -bottom. It will come out, they don't usually give trouble so therefore are rarely removed & rust in situ a bit.:)

Marvellous. More perseverance then.
As for M170RFA, you are not the sort of person to play Eminem (Doo doo be doodoo!) are you? To be honest, around here you could here these sound systems two minutes before you see the cars!
When it will come to a sound system for me, it'll have to be some 6x9" threeways. Quality sound output!;)
