I've seen these universal central locking kits for sale in various places, and I was wondering if anyone else had invested in one of these, did it fit and was it any good??

You would be very surprised to see the absolute lack of Maestros and Montegos in scrappy's round here, theyre just not interested in them anymore, I had to wait for absolutely ages before I could get a sunroof for my MG, and even then its a later type glass one! And it was a good 20 miles up the road :(
Even so, I thought it would be easier and more foolproof (is that possible with me about?) to buy a universal one, as the standard setup has its fair share of problems so I understand, the MOT tester at the local garage was telling me about a surefire way of getting into a centrally locked Monty or Maesty which involved the numberplate lights....! I hope he was joking!

We have bought a universal one from maplin, for our ex police car george. Couldn't tell you if its any good as its still in the box, waiting to be fitted.

It may be also worth noting that Maplin also sell spare parts for central door locking systems.. Not sure if they are a direct replacement for monty/maesty ones but they do 2 different versions.

I'll let you know how the fitting of the central locking goes when it gets to the top of never ending list of things to do.
