Is it possible to put a bit more CV joint grease into the inner cv joint without taking the driveshaft off, can you justwithdraw the CV joint a bit ?.

Or can the inner cv joint be detached from the driveshaft relatively easily without taking the driveshaft nut off ?

My n/s inner cv joint is a bit noisy.

You can undo the 6 bolts holding the inner cv joint to the flange, but you may find a metal plate covering the end of the cv joint. Removing the 6 bolts and then the cv joint rubber and moving the joint in and out while applying grease *may* help, but on my Monty it made no difference. I changed the n/s driveshaft complete, and while the car still hums, it doesn't sound like warp factor 5 on the SS Enterprise and I can hear the radio at 80mph again, and 'crunching noises' on full left lock have stopped.

Try looking at the state of the gearbox oil (dip the oil via the speedo cable aperture on top of the box with a clean finger), if the oil looks like 'glitter paint' your gearbox is probably the cause of this noise. If oil is ok, it's one (or both?) of the driveshafts. Or possibly wheelbearing(s)?

There is (or was) a modification on the Rover 600 inner C.V joint.
The smaller (locating boot to driveshaft, rather than boot to C.V) metal band/clip had to be removed. Then a syringe with "modified" grease was inserted under the boot(Usually a small amount of levering the boot up helped) and the grease was "injected" into the Boot/Joint.
The grease was yellow in colour! This was an official Mod./Bulletin by Rover and the the contents/part numbers may still be available.
It seemed to cure the Rumble/Knock that was heard as drive was taken up initially and while on the move, that was complained of.
Perhaps this may help any one with noisy inner joints. But i suppose the majority of cars that we deal with have done a lot of miles and replacement will probably be the only/best option.

Thanks for the replies, a sort of "worn" sound is coming from the inner cv joint when the wheel is rotated back and forth by hand.

What size is the driveshaft nut, looks about 1.5" 40mm ?

The club's just acquired a large stock of driveshafts with the inner CV joint on - which car are you having trouble with, and which side? Email / private message me if you'd like a replacement.
