Hi
I was on here a while ago but ive been offline for a while and ive only just managed to re-register. Ive got a bit of a problem with my maestro and im hoping someone can help me out. Its a H-reg MG 2.0i and ive had it off the road over the winter, whilst still starting it every 1-2 weeks, authoug the last time it was started was a month ago, and now it wont start. It turns over ok but no sign of trying to start. Ive taken one of the plugs out and there is a spark but no sign of fuel getting through, so i took the fuel pipe off the fuel rail and it pissed out fuel so I know the pumps ok. The only thing i can put it down too is the fuel ecu/injectors or what else could it be??????
Theres been alot of:banghead: and :censored: and a fair amount of:rage: as my mechanicing skills are more suited to points and S.U.s, im not too hot on this injection stuff.
Any ideas anyone?

Hi, it could be that the ecu is not being powered up. Check the main relay is ok.
A quick way to tell is observe what happens when you turn the ignition on. What should happen is if you turn on ignition the fuel pump runs for a few seconds then stops, when cranking the pump is fed by the starter circiut.
If you listen under the bonnet turn on ignition you should hear the main relay and fuel pump relay both click and then the fuel pump relay clicks again as it turns off the fuel pump, you should also hear the stepper motor rattling when you turn on the ignition and when you turn off as well. If you dont hear the stepper motor rattle you should check the main relay first.

I had my J plate efi off road through the first part of winter (the cold and wet bit), and had the same problems.
I checked for spark etc, changed plugs, leads, dizzy cap and rotor arm, and it runed out that the Ignition ecu had gone down!
Replaced ecu and it started first time.

Ok, thanks for the help there guys. That'll give me something else to try. Ive just put the ignition on to see if there were any under bonnet noises and it seems pretty much silent. im guessing its probably the main relay then. Ill go and investigate.........

Hi if it does turn out to be the main relay you must use the correct bosch relay as a normal 5 pin changeover relay wont work.;)

Thanks. I took the relays out, took the covers off, fiddeled with 'em, stuck 'em back in and it starts and runs now but only runs for a couple of seconds before it dies. Only the front relay is now operating so i went over to the local halfrauds. No luck, they dont stock them any more:rolleyes:
Im going to have to wait till monday to get one now, but it looks like its problem solved when i do! Thanks again people!!!

Well, I thought id only have to wait till today to get it going, but my trusty lucas specialist aint got any either! I know ive got some here somewhere that i took off one i scrapped, but like i say, they are 'somewhere':banghead:
And G733KKW, when you say 'not too hot on it, or hate it' I think ill have to go with you on that one, i think i hate it!! '60's and '70's cars are more my thing, i like the maestro, but its just too modern for me! Once this little problem is out of the way it will probably be up for sale, so that i can concentrate on restoring my Maxi. The beauty of restoring the maxi will be the Tax Free motoring!:p

Hi if you are having trouble sourcing a relay you could try the land rover dealers as the same relay is used on fuel injected range rovers and land rovers, both fuel pump and main relays. I know the early range rovers and the later ones with lucas hot wire both used this type of relay. :)
Regards Gary :)

Nice one cheers! The rover dealers in this area have all but dissapeared, the only one thats left is caterham but ive been there before and they only seem to be interested if you have a car less that 3yrs old, i went there for something for the maxi and the muppet behind the counter said ''wos wunna dem? so now i give them a wide birth. We've got afew land rover dealers in the area so ill give one of them a try. Thanks again mate.

Hi yes they are both identical. I seem to remember just one relay of yours was faulty? Where did you manage to get them from as it will probably be of help to others trying to source them. :)

i got the relays from a small local ex rover dealer. They havnt been an official rover dealer for quite some time, but they're alot more use than any other rover dealer i know, or knew. Its the kind of place you kind of forget about when you need something abit quick, but they always come up trumps in the end! He said he managed to get them straight from bosch, so wether or not he has a 'special' phone number for them or not i dont know. do you think it would be worth me buying a bulk load of 'em for other members on here? if so ill see what i can sort out;)
The cars sorted now, i put the relays in this morning and it started first time, abeit only on 3 cylinders. So a quick trip to halfrauds was made to get some plugs and now its all good. Thanks again to g force for putting me on the right track. Now all it needs is a quick check over, mot and its ready to up for sale.
