If it's not one thing it's another - now my trip meter won't reset - any ideas anyone?
Doris didn't pass her MOT on Friday - she didn't fail it either cos she wouldn't go! Took the battery off to charge it up (didn't seem to need much, don't think it was that) and when I was putting it back I noticed the multi-plug to the ignition ECU was a bit loose - not much, but it may have caused a problem. Any way I've put a cable tie round it now so if she does it again I'll know it wasn't that. Mot rescheduled for Monday now.

 Let me guess, the reset button has gone almost solid and (probably) all of the digits have gone out of line.
It is a very common problem with the Smiths speedometers fitted to pre-1987 cars (I can remember these being replaced under warranty when the cars were new!)
I have never taken one apart to try to fix this problem: I have had a good look at one before, and the cause is not at all obvious.
Likely cure may be a new speedo if you are bothered about having a trip meter.
If you end up wanting to fit a Nippon type from a post '87 car, you will need the speedo cable to go with it, as they have a different end from the Smiths one.
Hope that helps!

One of my pet niggles is the trip meters that won't reset! I didn't know they were made by different companies, I usually just differentiated between them by saying "The rectangular buttoned ones that are rubbish" and "The circular buttoned ones that work properly"
I have a big stash of them in the garage, so I might investigate how they work and see what I can do with one, or I will give up and fit a later set of instruments! :)

Yup, it's the rectangular one! I guess I'll have to brush up my maths then - I like to know roughly how far it is till the next fill-up - and the fuel gauge isn't entirely reliable at the lower end, it tends to say quarter full for a while and then empty! Not going to start swopping speedos tho.
Hm, notepad in sun visor pocket then.........
