The Haynes manual recommends silicone sealant. I just used some blue hermatite and it has not caused any problems.

One point to note however is that the in the Haynes manual they show a picture of the sealant when is it squeezed onto the pump and they put it round the OUTSIDE of the bolts. To my mind that would let water into the bolt threads and potentially out via the bolt holes. Perhaps unlikely given the tolerances but I didn't fancy doing the job all over again so I sealed to the inside of the bolt holes. You just need a waterproof sealant which stays a bit squidgy. I have heard of people using normal houshold bathroom type silicone sealant without any problems. Remember - this area is not under the same strain as a head gasket would be.

You can buy gasket-paper at a good automotive suppliers - then carefully cut out the shape that is required! About 50p for an A4 sheet. Theres a few thicknesses available - i usually use the middle size one.
