Hi. I have a 1983 1.6 HLS with a R series engine. I have had lots of trouble starting it from cold lately, and traced the fault to a dodgy carb. However, the engine appears to be down on power a bit, and I have already replaced all the usual ignition bits. Assuming the worst (valve problem? ) is it possible / easy to fit a later 1.6 s series into the earlier models? I was planning on taking the head off to check valves etc, but had a big problem trying to get hold of a gasket kit for the earlier engine. I currently have a manual choke, the cut off valve is disconnected so I guess I wouldnt need the ECu off the new engine?? Any help appreciated.

Unless you have a donor car, this isnt really worth doing for the hassle factor. At the very least you would need a late 1989-on unleaded car, then spend some money on gaskets, head de-coke etc, it would work out cheaper to have your existing head converted to unleaded.
