I have been looking at the 0-60 times of the Maestro EFi compared to that of a Turbo and I see there is quite a difference. Is this just due to the extra power or is there a different gearbox for the turbo?

The EFi gearbox is better for acceleration than the turbo (ignoring time taken for gear changes). But the extra 43bhp power of the turbo has a lot to do with it ;)

So what you are saying is that if I fit a turbo engine with a EFi box it will be even quicker than the turbo times?

Acceleration will improve, but an EFi box cannot take the torque - it'll be nackered in no time. The turbo box has stronger bearings.

I am asking this because I am considering getting a MG Maestro for grasstrack racing. I have two turbo engines (out of a Montego) and I have a Montego turbo box as well as a standard Maestro EFi box. since I haven't been able to sell those parts I was going to fit them in a Maestro for racing.
Your point about the torque breaking the boxd is noted but I doubt if I can generate enough on a loose surface but time will tell :)

The Turbo uses a 3.65-1 FDR as opposed to the 3.9-1 FDR of the NASP Efi. Fitting the Efi gearbox to the turbo engine has been done many times but due to the narrow powerband and low rev limit of 6k it may feel quite short-geared, but it has been proven to improve 0-60 times marginally and up to 1/2 a second on the 1/4 mile. Extra wheelspin will be a big downfall of fitting the shorter box, as well as potentially less life for the gearbox as the Turbo has an extra bearing on the mainshaft.

can you tell me if the Montego turbo box is the same as the Maestro turbo box? In fact is there any way of telling them apart.

OK so I think I will fit the Monty turbo engine and box. the longer 1st should help wheelspin off the line. most cars just get moving then change up to 2nd anyway particularly in the wet. You rarely get into 3rd because of the twistiness of the track.
Is there any was of telling the difference between turbo and EFi boxes?

Turbo boxes have a code on them starting K7, EFi K6. The last two letter denote whether its an earlier or later type (AR and A0 respectively).

OK thanks for that I will check. All I need now is a donor vehicle:)
