There's a few pictures here http://www.virtualbrum.co.uk/bullring03.htm

Makes an interesting comparison with the old bullring (http://www.virtualbrum.co.uk/images/bullring/bullring2.jpg)

It was only 3 years ago I stood outside New Street station watching the old bullring come down, it was in a bit of a state by that time though. I hate radical change and in a way it's a bit of a shame to see an era of 60s design disappearing (and most would say good), but things move on. You have to wonder how well all these shiny futuristic looking buildings springing up all over the place will age...

It's happening to the Manchester Arndale Centre too. Not necessarily a bad thing ;)

So what's wrong with the Manchester Arndale Centre? It's part of the Manchester I grew up with, and it survived a direct hit off the 1996 IRA bomb! Can't see a modern building doing that.

I think it's a shame that the old buildings come down in the name of 'improvement'. The oldest shop in Bury (well, oldest shop building ) was knocked down for bypass-widening works - no outcry. They built an 'out of town' Tesco just off the bypass, including tarmacing over a burial ground/cemetery which includes war graves - only a small outcry about that one, and a 'token' plaque to mark the site... it leaves me speechless!

The main objections to the Arndale IMO are the yellow cladding and the lack of maps/directions inside! (True story) I was once in Manchester with a friend, and he asked me which was the Arndale Centre. I said "That horrible yellowish concrete effort," and he replied "Do you mind?! My Dad designed that!" before conceding that I did in fact have a point :) Having met the chap in person, I'm not surprised that his son went at him with a knife - it's one WEIRD family! The only thing my friend's dad ever said to me was one Christmas: "Would you like a cracker with cheeeeeeeeeese?" (I guess you had to be there!)

I do like most of the modifications/rebuilding done to Manchester since the bomb - in many ways it was the best thing that could have happened! The new Printworks is fabulous, the Shambles Square is gorgeous, even Piccadilly Gardens looks presentable, and the new fountains there and the Shambles are lovely. M&S and Selfridges are fresh and modern without being OTT...

... but couldn't they have left the Corn Exchange as it was? I used to love browsing through there for books and clothes :( Affleck's Palace is nowhere near what it was, although that has nothing to do with architecture, and even the "replacement," the Coliseum, has gone again.

I think the change to picadilly gardens was err...a tad dramtic - shocked the hell out of me!!!

I used to joke that the welcome to Manchester sign should have a sign saying "Building Site".

How its changed in 5 years, first the swiiming pool on Oxford road, the stadium, the printworks, canon street, voyagers walk, the lowry centre and salford quays in general!

And where did one of the Piccadilly Hotels towers go to? hehe

The fountains in Piccadilly are nice - shame about the sodding huge conrcrete bus sheltery thing, and the huge new office block at one end.

The 'Berlin Wall' in Piccadilly Gardens is definatley not to everyones tastes, but the rest of the Gardens is nice and open, although every time i have been the fountains have been turned off!

The sooner the tiles have come off the Arndale the better - it was dark and horrible, and really says it all about 60's archetecture!

And what about the East Manchester Regeneration? SportCity stadium (now the home of Man City) and around there? Now that can only be for the best, compared to how it all was.

Don't often go into Manchester, but yes the Bomb probably was the best thing that could have happened. I still think a small section of the Arndale Centre should be maintained for posterity though - sorry. It's a vast improvement around the Printworks and Cathedral but haven't seen most of the other changes.

I like the Salford Quays but am not keen at all on the Trafford Centre - I hate shopping anyway. It looked good from a plane at twilight though...
