View Full Version : BIG XMAS MEET
Firefly
2nd September 2003, 18:26
hi everyone,
due to the fact that we are all getting confused on here, i thought i should start a new thread to organise the xmas meet.
because i'm partly to blame for the confusion, i don't mind sorting it out.
i have sent both rich and cho a personal message, asking them to close skatiechiks original thread.
i think we should now stick to this thread ok?
(i'm sorry if anyone is not happy with me for this, i am just trying to find the best solution)

First of all - we should find a date which all of us can agree on as once we get that bit organised - everything else can slot in place.
Would anyone like to make a suggestion?
:p

good idea on putting both threads into one,
my suggestion on a date would be 13th/14th december but i am quite easy on any date in that month

How about the 25th again? Ho ho ho, erm, hee hee.
Nar really, any date is ok for me and GGT - that is if he has the new engine installed by then.  :banghead:
What's happening regarding that "best decorated M Car" comp.? Bit of white tinsel will make a red GGT look very christmassy indeed!  ;)

right,1st things 1st,i'm going 2 put all the info we already have on this thread....
right,i will try to put in some sane order (laugh).
the north posse do their convoy, (i am leaving you guys to sort out route and collection order between you.)
we thought you could use all or part of the m car route as this will mean you have less to plan.
i think we are the furthest ones away?(if someone out there is further, please let me know). so we will be the first south posse members. if anyone down here wants to volunteer to work our route out, i would be grateful.
we are meeting at cowley sports hall if atv can organise that? we can go from there to a place to eat, yes?
i want to know how many people would take part in skatiechiks idea of a fancy dress?
the communication is something that needs discussion,i thought maybe trying to find cb's, failing that its mobiles or the walkie talkies that we have, and tony's got. (i don't know if any1 else has some??)
and malc and atv will be the last ones from both convoys, as they live closest to oxford.(i think)
so, all we need is a date, and a route for the south posse and to finalise the details.ok?
we can't do 13/14 sept. or 22 november, other than that we are free.
ok, so lets get together and talk!
feel free to pm, or email me.

I can't even plan a route out of Manchester! Rich, can you do that for us thankyou very much please? ;)
The "Fancy Dress" is for the cars, isn't it? What do you think of this idea, anyone?
I am free to attend on any date that month (providing it is the weekend, Sunday preferred!) with GGT if he is ready! :)

thanks for your input,steve.
yes the fancy dress is for the cars, but if anyone wants to wear a santa hat,or dress up themselves, that is fine.
i think we are all going to agree on a sunday,as some of us work saturday.
right,so come on you other guys, lets have some input!
us southys need to work out where we all are,so we can work out a route!
i just thought i should make sure we are all clear on the location where we will meet.
its cowley in OXON ok?

The best route down from the north is those from manchester area, drive across woodhead pass, pick people up from the yorkshire area.
Then we can go down the M1 picking people up as appropriate.
Then A44/M42 then M40
Hows that sound?

Well, I had a word with my dad (who would be driving GGT) about this meet 160 miles away, and his reply was "B:censored:s to that."
So, I'm not going, but the rest of you have fun ok!

er steve, dont think of it in miles...Think of it in time.
Oxford is only 2 hrs and a bit from Sheffield, so imagine it will be 2hrs 30mins from Manchester.
Thats about £30 in petrol round trip...Which is hardly anything!
Considering it takes me 10hrs to drive to my Dads house, a 2hr drive is nice, gentle relaxing and enjoyable.
You can always get a lift with someone else anyhow.

Hmm, I'm beginning to wonder about the venue. When we had our AGM at the NSVA there , the president mentioned something about the place getting refurbished and I'm not sure wether or not they have done it, or even started it yet. I'll be there next on Saturday, so I'll check it out.

Steve, I can give you a lift, or RDGelder will hopefully have passed his test by then. Or...
Oxford is approx 175 miles from Bury via M6 and M40, it might be slightly longer via the M1 but I'm sure this route would facilitate picking up more people and cars than going on the M6 (which I know intimately and find extremely underwhelming having driven to Brighton every couple of weeks for a year when at Uni) so for reasons of keeping awake I'm in favour of the M1/M42/M40 route. I reckon on 2 1/2 hours to get to Gaydon (140 miles) taking it easy and including stops via the M6...
Where are people who are interested in the 'Northern Run' distributed with regard to the Motorways?
What about people who might like to come (eg Terry who went on the M-Car Rally) but don't use the Forum? I've tried ringing Terry and left a message but had no reply yet. Mebbe we need to wait and get another 'ad' put in the next edition of Monstro, like for the M-Car Rally? Gives us a bit more time to prepare.
How much would a CB or PMR be? Not that everyone would want to use one or fit one anyway. Or just swap mobile phone nos.
Any thoughts on this? Should hopefully have a pc by the weekend so we could have a brainstorming session then?
Beaker
4th September 2003, 14:08
Yes i think the M1/M42/M40 route would be best as well.
We live on Woodhead pass, so near the M1, so would be good for us.
Might make george into a big bauble or an angel for the fancy dress. :D
PMR's have come down and awful lot in price recently, I think Argos sell them and so do Maplin.
Ok just had a quick look on argos there are a set of 2 for £30, didn't look at the spec, but there are loads of them on there.
Yes and AD would be good in the next monstro, but proboably best to get organised and sort out the finer details now.
I think the weekend 6th/7th December would be best, with the 7th being the preferred day, as people may work on Saturdays.

right,
i have just asked steve to sort a flyer out,so now we need a date we all agree on.
rich is going to work a route out for you northy's, and if anyone else this side of oxford lets me know they are coming, and where they are,i will sort our route out.
e692wtt
4th September 2003, 17:31
OK... cheers for info re PMRs will have to see what we can do.
How's this for a route sketch for we northerners?
Meet initially at MacD's where we met for the M-Car Rally (for local people local eg Maria & Chris, Me, Steve [if taking a car] RDGelder [ditto], possibly John?), then head to Sheffield Area (Tony, E-T-V & Skatiechik, and others, sorry but I'm hopeless with names?)then meet others at Services along the M1, M42 and M40? We could meet people coming down the M6 at the first services on the M40, mebbe.
Allow 4 hours from the start at Glossop/Hyde, so people can still arrive late at the Services en route?
I think missing the M6 out if at all possible is a very good idea as I am sure most of us know how busy it can get (he said, being diplomatic...) around the M6/M5 junction.
Let's choose some dates, and yes Sunday probably is a better day as well.
Bear in mind also the AGM (when?) and could we tie in something with this? Mebbe an overnight stay at a motel on the Saturday arriving later in the evening? Just an idea. The AGM will be advertised in the next Monstro anyway, unless something has already been sorted Jonathan?
Your comments and suggestions, please...

i have 4 pmrs here we can share out
Firefly
4th September 2003, 18:01
we have 2 pmr's (which at the mo we won't need, cos its only us coming from the south!)(hint hint).
i was at the market today, and on 1 of these mobile phone accessory stalls they were selling the same pmr's as we've got,£10 cheaper!!
bloody typical!
but i thought if we need them, i could buy some more?

We have two pmr's, as well. So thats six from the North. :)

October 26th is looking like the strongest possibility for the AGM so far but that's not by any means certain and it'll most likely be in or around the West Midlands - too early for a Christmas meet really.

AGM means annual general meeting. AGM's are generally open to all members of the public who feel it may be worthwhile attending for their benefit. Well for clubs i have been involved with
But then it all depends on the club, some clubs have different rules and constituitions.
I am sure someone will be along in a minute to tell you, what the deal is with this club.
Hope that helps

Oooh, you want to watch out for AGMs. If you turn up, you tend to get elected onto the committee - isn't that right, Simon? ;)
Beaker
4th September 2003, 23:08
Ah, i presume simon, didn't intend on getting elected? :)
Jonathan
4th September 2003, 23:08
The meeting itself is strictly for paid up M&MOC members only as you might expect. Unlike everything else on the calendar it's conducted formally and with due sobriety so might not be to everyone's taste. But necessary as with any organisation.
For the full procedure the constitutions for the M&MOC are available for all to see here (http://www.maestro.org.uk/club/rules.html)
Beaker
4th September 2003, 23:22
Does formal mean that tea, coffee , squash and biscuits won't be provided then? ;)
Jonathan
4th September 2003, 23:26
We can usually stretch to that ;)

I cannot go to the AGM because i cannot join the M&M club.
This is because there are a lack of committe members to process the applications.
It seems like a catch 22 situation to me?
I only wanted to download the form too.
I better shut up before i get elected for the joining/membership secretary job!!!!
P.s can any one help with my posting pics problem? please see Maestro Race Pic thread
Thanks

If enough members turn up to the AGM, there should be enough 'safety in numbers' to avoid being elected to the Committee... so let's get as many people as possible to give Simon a chance of not being re-elected?
Could we arrange a convoy from the north for the AGM anyway? Jonathan has all-but said what the date will be, so that's a start. Make a day of it and tour the Museum (I've not been there before) but appreciate others have.
Then do it all again later in the year for further south (Cowley?) or mebbe early next year? I'll cheerfully attend both 'events'.
:)

Poor old Simon ... turned up out of interest, ended up being press-ganged into being agony uncle / spares person. Look at him now...!
Plans are afoot to sort out the membership secretary problem - should hopefully all be done soon.
e692wtt, your PM box is full, but any evening next week should be OK - drop me a line to let me know when's best for you.

So that 's why I've had no pms lately. Actually, I've found a problem with my outbox in that the pms I've deleted are still listed, but have told Jonathan so hopefully that will, as they say, be that.
Apologies if anyone's tried to send me pms and not been able to.:o I'll get the hang of this one day...:horror:

Hi guys...
I intend to stand as Chairman once again. I don't mind - in fact I quite like it! Don't be afraid of being on the committee because we are just a regullar bunch of people without anoraks and it is a great way of directly being involved with the preservation and promotion of your favourite cars (and vans and campers etc). Seriously! Most people who have come along to AGM's actually enjoy them, even though, as Jonathan says they are a serious event where important club business is transacted.
Maria is right, I turned up at an AGM once, joined at the meeting and was voted onto the committee. Wa-hey!

Right as you are all well aware.
The plan was to dress our maestros/montegos in christmas decorations.
But to provide encouragement what do people think of a prize for the best dressed maestro/montego?
Also atv how is asking about the venue going? Is everyone satisfied with the location? Does anyone know a good family pub that we can book a large party into for xmas dinner as well?
Anyway...Anyone has any ideas please throw them around in here?

yes, come on guys, let's have some more ideas off some of you who havn't posted yet.
we still need a definite date, and a definite location.
atv will find out about the sportshall and ground, but he needs a date to work with!
also, does anyone know if there is a wacky warehouse or brewsters pub near oxford?
lets have some more input guys, then i will put it all together so we know where we are with it.

Right then. I went to the social club today and it was still intact. (Maybe they have finished the refurbishment.) I couldn't find anyone to talk to though. However, I managed to get a couple of 'phone numbers:
(01865) 770163
(01865) 717148
Perhaps a club official could book through either of these numbers.
Sorry I couldn't be any more help.:(
