View Full Version : Adjusting mixture/idle speed

Hi,

The idle speed on my 1.3LX is much to slow, also it lacks power sometimes. I'm wondering if the garage I bought it from messed about with the mixture for the emissions MOT...

I've read through a load of posts on here, so I'm going to check stuff at the weekend, rotor arm, points, the carb dashpot etc, but is it straight forward to adjust the mixture? (I'm guessing that is the problem!)?

I've bought a Haynes manual off ebay, but it's not turned up yet  I've got a Mini one though, will the engine bit be the same?

Cheers

Justin

Hi there,

The info you require is in our FAQ. Here. (http://www.maestro.org.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=2339)

I would guess that the mini is similar to the Maestro, providing it has an SU carb as the Maestro does.

Tuning Maestro engines isn't all that difficult and you can't go too far wrong.

Good luck.

Gave the engine a bit of a tune up yesterday, following the advice in ETV's faq. What a result, it runs much better. Cheers

That FAQ refers to A series - is it much the same for R & S series engines?

I'm ashamed to say I can't remember which mine is! :o

Hi your maestro will have an R series engine and many procedures are the same for both A & R series. :)

I have to admit I don't really understand Mr Haynes instruction re topping up the carb dashpot. He say.......... oh, I've just re-read it after removing my dunce's cap and it's perfectly straighforward! Oh well, I wasn't having a very good day when I did it!

But what on earth am I supposed to pour the oil from to get it to go into that teeny little hole? And does it matter if it goes round the sides? I'm not all all familiar with these SU carbs - had an SU on the old Moggy Minor years ago but it wasn't the same.

To top up the carburettor, all I usually do is pour half a capfull of oil from the 5-litre container (that is, into its own cap), and use that. It's still usually too much!
