Recently My Windscreen Wipers On My MG Maestro Have Started To Make A Horrible Screeching Sound Every Time I Use Them ?
The Noise Can Be Heard Inside And Outside The Car !
I Have Sprayed Some WD40 On The Wiper Joints But This Has Not Helped At All ?????
Could It Be The Wiper Blades Motor ?
Can Anyone Help ?

Thanx

you should try and listen to each part at a time to see if its that which is making the noise, the wiper motor is under the plastic cover over the heater intake, remove the cover and have a listen, its really easy taking one out and swaping it over.

I Have Not Removed The Cover But The Sound Is Coming From Within There Etc

Not Sure How To Go About This ?????

Do I Need To Take The Wipers Off To Take The Wiper Motor Out Etc ?

Is It Maybe The Wiper Mechanism Etc Corroded Slightly And Not The Motor

If So Is It Possible To Maybe Put Grease On The Mechanism Etc To Try And Stop The Screeching Sound ?

Does Anyone Have Any Ideas

Thanx

if u look i think the linkage just bolts onto the motor. it is easy enough oiling the joints of the linkage so try this first and if you get no luck suspect the motor. i would think that if it is the motor you would get one from a scrappers even if the yard doesnt have a car in they may have a moter on the shelf. or if you fancy it, take yours to bits and try and find the problem. it sounds like a dry joint somewhere though so oil might do some good.

the wipers dont need to be removed to take the motor out and once the long plastic cover at the top of the engine compartment if removed you can see the linkage in ther. its fairly easy to access the joints.

you will be able to clear out all the crap thats accumulated in there over the years too.

I Don't Think The Plastic Cover On The Top Will Come Away Without Breaking Will It ?

With 'judicious' leverage the balljoints can be 'popped apart', greased and pushed back together. If changing part of the mechanism though, the later Montegos seem to have balljoints of a larger size then the earlier Montegos... mebbe buy the whole linkage, mine only cost a fiver including wiper arms and blades...:)

Access to the linkage is 'fiddly' but simple on a Montego, as for a Maestro I'm afraid I don't know, but would expect it to be simple in that there is some sort of plastic cover on the bulkhead (not the metal scuttle cover that the wipers come through on a Montego) behind which the mechanism resides. Go for it!

Well from memory... and after a few ciders that isn't too great.....

Open the bonnet... leave the vent grill thing between the bonnet and windscreen well alone if possible as they almost always break.

There is a rupper strip at the back of the bulk head sealing to the bonnet.. pull it off.

There are a couple of screws securing a black plastic thing under the strip you've just removed near the bonnet hinges.. remove these and lift away this black plastic bulkhead thing.. underneath should lie the wiper mechanism if I haven't been drinking too much cider. grease the linkage particularly where it connects and passes thgouth the panel to connect to the wipers. if it still sequeals then swap the wiper motor for a scrap one..

Hope this helps

'The black plastic thing below the rubber strip'... on a Montego this is held in place by 2 screws plus the 'rubber strip' at its top - the offside screw is easily accessible, the nearside screw requires the washer bottle mounting screws removing for access to it. As I said, 'fiddly'...:rage: not fun, the washer bottle mounting screws seize...

The wiper linkage on my maestro wore out compleytly, the nylon bushes inside the bits where the spindles stick out, where the arms go on, had wore big holes, so you could grab the arm and wiggle it about wildly! As the wipers moved acros the scren, they were also being forced up and down creating a horrible noise. In the end, I made Rover make a complete new linkage, cost £50, but the peace and quiet, and the operation now is superb!

Rich, did they actually make it up from scratch or did they just get all the parts from the factory and sell them to you. The exact same thing has happened to mine, the wipers vibrate along the screen and when you lift them off they wobble because there is no bush in the spindles holes. For £50 id definitely get a whole new set up.

Well, I ordered it some months before I actually got it. When I finally got a phone call to say it was in, I was told that there had been none left in the factory, and they had had to find a manufacturer and actually make it! Apparently items like this they are obliged to be able to supply for so many years after the cars stopped being made.

It was the whole linkage, from the spindles up to the ball joint on the motor gearbox.

Part number is RDKD 10016 "Drive Link Assy" £42.40 each + Vat

Hope this helps!

Cheers Rich,

I've been having problems with my wipers too, they park in different places, i've put this down to the linkage, tried one from the scrap yard and didn't make much difference. when it's raining and i'm on the motorway, they go off the screen, compared to normal driving.

Good to know they are still available.

Cheers Dean.
