Well todays Rally made a great day out, and went very well for a first attempt! Seven cars made it in total with Two Maestro Campers, Tony's Covertible Monty, Three other Maesty's and a Monty.
Thankfully, the day went without incident (apart from loosing Tony - but he managed to find the rest of us hiding in a pub car-park! ;) ) and everyone had a good time! Bring on the next one!!!
Some photo's from today...

Well, that was an excellent day out! Lovely scenery, great fun and company, and a very nice dinner. Big thanks to Rich for planning the route and leading us all, and thanks to Stephen for the hard work with the flyers and leaflets.
Hope some more pics are posted soon :)
[edit... and here they are!! :D]

Excellent! Looking forward to the next one. The pictures look better than I thought they would and Steve's car and mine were slightly different shades of red.
PS: I thought you were trying to slow us down earlier Steve - I had to keep behind Rich in case I missed the M60 turn off.:)

Sorry about that John, but C750 BND was behind us on the motorway - and when he slowed down and pulled onto the hard shoulder, we tried to get Rich to turn off and see if Terry was ok. Just after you overtook us, C750 BND came blinding up behind us!

Thanks. I'm glad people have digital cameras, I'll have to get me one of them... I'll just have to see how the 35mm photos turn out.
I have to thank Rich and, erm, Rich for leading the convoy today, and planning the route... and everyone else for attending really! :)

Did anyone spot that green Maestro that passed us on Snake Pass? And that one on someones driveway, a Nightfire Red one...?

I flashed my lights at the green one I think. That was an L reg Nightfire red car on someone's drive, it was in pretty mint condition.

They're the ones. We couldn't flash the lights as the stalk (amongst other things) is buggered, so we beeped instead.
I'm not sure if Rich saw it, but there was an orange Maestro Van on Bury New Road too.

I enjoyed that, thanks everyone! The weather could have been a lot worse! It's always interesting meeting people face-to-face when one has only ever communicated without seeing them, and yesterday was no exception. I was especially happy to see that Jonathan was there after travelling a couple of hundred miles - to quote that film, "we need do-ers in our movement Brian!" - now that is commitment! Well done also to John for locating us after losing his way (not difficult in Manchester) before the start point, and for Tony locating us at our lunch stop. Thanks also to Richard for some good 'reading of the maps' over the section from Baslow to Hathersage, as this bit wasn't on the route plan (my error I think).
Thanks for letting me lead the Convoy, I thought I did quite well keeping us together, but I have done it before! I felt like I had 'taken over' sometimes, as it was all Steve's idea, especially when I was choking you all with blue smoke...
Have also enjoyed the photos - Monty doesn't look too bad, does he? Well, not from a distance...
It was a pleasure meeting you all, and hope we can all do it again (and again?) soon.
The other other Rich.:)

Well what can I say... fantastic! Your visitor from the South enjoyed every minute of it, although I am sorry CHO couldn't be bothered to make it after throwing another little strop. Rather than bringing my daily driver on the run I got the chance to test the back seat in Dan's "new" camper :)
Thanks for taking so much care in organising everything so thoroughly Steve/Rich, we haven't really had a proper run before and I thought it went really smoothly considering. Was Derbyshire was quite as prepared for us though? I'll travel a couple of hundred miles at any excuse especially for a drive around what has to be one of my favourite scenic bits of our country.
So who wants to do me a report for the next Monstro?
John S
26th August 2003, 17:32
If it hadn't have been for Rich's/Steve's thorough organising it wouldn't have been so successful. Suffice to say - don't ask me for directions as I could barely find my way to MacDs(!):o :) May be worth mentioning that there are a few Maestros/Montegos in my area I could put notes on to make the owners aware of future events - we need to put the participant numbers up don't we after all?
Hope to see CHO in the future and you never know perhaps I'll have a proper word with you then!

Hey, M170 RFA, don't be hard on yourself - you found us didn't you??? Not many people would have managed that!
Glad to oblige pointing you in the right direction on the way home, even though it looked like Death Race 2000 with Steve, Terry and yourself swerving around each other in my rear view mirror, at one point!

I thought A615 NFV went extremely well, I noticed you catching up without any great difficulty on the Snake Pass! It's difficult knowing how to actually use a car of A615's condition (not meant in a negative manner) until you've really driven it and gained confidence in what the car will actually do - I feel the same with any car I drive for the first (quite a) few times. I think A615 aquitted himself very well on the day.
At least we missed out on the Orange JCBs on Winnat's Pass...
I'm just relieved that Monty stopped smoking by halfway, as predicted by me although I don't think anyone believed me he would. I'm used to it, you see...:o

it stoped smoking was that because it had run out of cigs or oil:p
e692wtt
28th August 2003, 13:17
Ah ha ha.
Run out of oil in the places it accumulates in slow use and then burns off when the engine gets used . He's far too healthy for a cigarette smoker, anyway...
Funny how the oil only drops slowly on the dipstick though.
Anybody got any ideas for the next one?
The other other Rich.:)
PS I'll ring Terry and ask if he wants to contribute anything for Monstro.

OK - have you got his number, here, I'll type it below... I might be losing it but I ain't that bad yet.
Who's we ? I'm happy to throw some ideas 'into the pot' or just let somebody else write something. Let me know.
Is somebody else contacting Terry for his ideas? I think it's only fair he should be contacted (if he's not made contact with someone already) as he's the only Club Member in attendance who is not a Forum Member (he's not got a pc at home and doesn't go on the Net at work, but read about the Rally from our 'ad' in Monstro)

I really wish Terry would get himself net-connected!
Hmm... I have an idea for the next event. Could someone bring a laptop with a local working copy of the site? Jon, could your PDA thingy do it? That way we could try to persuade some of our members to get themselves connected.
Jonathan
28th August 2003, 20:03
Nope, I can't see Terry ever being persuaded to get wired somehow
Most of us can't imagine life without the 'net but a good proportion of the membership, as with the population at large, barely know what it is and probably aren't that interested either. It is a bit of an alien concept if you're not used to it.
I can stick pages from the site onto the PDA, although because of the screen size it's hardly ideal for viewing it. We do have a laptop (although it's not mine).
The sooner people get something down on paper (or better on disk) about the run the more you'll remember. How it's presented is entirely up to the autohor(s). I want to fill about 2-3 pages, and we've already got plenty of super pictures, I'll only need to use a couple of them too.

It was the first one i was on about.
The second one is a pretty good idea, "through the mirror" effect.
Were they taken with a "normal" camera?
