i like them cos they are 'local' products (used 2 live in brum) and you can't mistake them 4 anyfing else ont the road:)

Maestro - it does what it says on the tin!:) (that was my motto).
I reckon a 1.3 should be a great 'starter' car. I learn't in my Turbo D in 2001 but the clutch on these are much heavier than the petrols I find.

they are all good cars depends on what you want in a small car and what is avaliable, they all have good/bad points

A maestro would be ideal. Not too hard to fix problems for a novice and spares/parts tend to be cheap.
Not had much experiences with Metro's so couldn't really comment. Although safety wise I would much prefer to be in a Maestro than a Metro.
The problem you will find with Vauxhall Nova's is finding a good quality one which hasn't been boy raced, thus one without a knackered engine. Nova's are the classic boy racer car.

Nova? Why are you even concidering this?
Maestro's are the best choice by far, for all the reasons people have stated on this thread. I am learning to drive at the moment and have a Maestro.

Well my first vehicle after passing my test was the Maestro van that I still have and am in the process of renovating. I was going to buy a F**d E****t van, but the vendor pranged it before I could.
Then one day, a taxi driver who knew me (Who was driving a Montego taxi, as it happens) told me about this Maestro which appeared to be in better nick than the E****t despite being the same age. The rest is history.:D

The Maestro is the ideal first car (get a 1.3L - they are cheaper to insure, nippier than they should be, have the incredibly reliable A series engine, and more fun to drive than they look!). It is also the ideal student car as you can easily get 4 passengers in or, with the rear seats down, you can transport all your worldly goods from home to uni and back. A 17" computer monitor fits neatly in the passenger footwell, by the way.
Novas are too small (although very fast due to being light and having an overhead cam engine) and Metros are really too small (as in fatal). Oh, and good Maestros are very cheap.

I am in the same position as Richard, as I'm learning to drive at the moment.
I have an MG 2.0 efi which I paid £100 last year.
Just down the road from me is an off-the-road driving school, perfect for beggingers and the nervous, and people who haven't passed their test! I drive my MG down there with my Dad, and its BRILLIANT!
:D
I know I'm not going to be changing my car for a couple of years after I pass!

my first car is my current maestro,. its cheap on parts, comfy, has loads of room and has been reliable since i have had it. i feel that it is a solid car which makes me feel safer. novas cost alot ont insurance, metros are zippy but i find them too small and rover 100s are a posher version of them. i think they (maestros) are a good first car.

My first car was a Maestro and my second, third and fourth!
1. 1.3HLE
2. MG 2.0i
3. MG Turbo
4. MG 1600
Still have the Turbo and 1600 - won't be buying anything else until they are completely beyond repair and the price of Z-saloons drops to a couple of thousand. Early ZTs already worth less than half original price.
