Hi all, just about to buy a T16 engine and box from a new shape 820ti, but ive absolutly no idea which size speedo drive cable i need, or how to ensure an accurate speedo - my gearbox is a bit ropey and wont survive the engine so im using the 820ti one....

any one got ANY help or advice with t16 conversion (other than the Ultimate guide on mgcars?)

thanks in advance!

I'll be undertaking the M/T series route very soon. If you use the 820 gearbox (a 820ti does not exist but a 620ti does) depending on which gearbox it is, the speedo reading will be well out if using the 800 Vitesse gearbox and a lot closer if its the 620ti box as this uses the same FDR as the Efi Maestro. The speedo cable from the Maestro is a simple swop for the sender unit in the Rover gearbox. Any other advice just ask.

yup, sorry for the lack of clarity! its a vitesse, i havent got all the details yet as it was found by a friend, but he says its new-shape vitesse, 800 series. i think i might have to get my speedo recalibrated by speedy cables cos the car im putting it in has a set of 16" wheels which may make a tiny difference in addition to the gearbox differences. i know someone covered this in the past, but does someone have the information about the different gear ratios in the various rover220/420/620/820/maestro gearboxes? im not really looking for out and out top speed, but hitting 60mph before third gear would be nice...

i may have to have a look at the speedo in the rover the engine is in to see if its in anyway suitable for a transplant, solves speedo hassles if it is.

I recently sent a four-page file on PG1 gearboxes, and it was posted on this forum by Jonathan Sellars. But I can send it to you privately if you email me on

Only problem is that I may be wary of reading my emails over the next few days, unless somebody can offer a solution to the well publicised virus that is doing the rounds just now.
