How much do you chaps think is a reasonable amount for a garage to charge to replace the timing belt on my nasp diesel Maestro 700 van, and also renew an outer cv joint? I was under the bonnet today and thought I'd check the timing belt - there's a bloody HOLE in the middle of the belt. I checked in the manual and it all looks a bit fiddly to be doing in the street, and anyway it will need to go into the garage for the cv joint as everything is rusted solid  :giveup:ps it's a 1993 van

Hmmm at a guess I'd say a couple of hours to do the timing belt (maybe less as it isn't that difficult with the right tools). About an hour to do the outer CV joint as they are pretty easy to do so long as you can get the hub nut undone.

I think the belt should be 20 quid ish and the cv joint 30-40ish.

Er......... not sure whether there is a slight misunderstanding here. Surely Dan was referring to the purchase price of the belts and CV joints. This means the prices quoted are for doing it yourself.

Around here the garage mechanic cost-per-hour is around £60 to £70, so three hours work adds £180 to the bill.

Good luck.

Yes the times quoted will be the time taken by the garage to do it and the cost is roughly the cost for the parts. As labour pirces vary so much I tend to quote hour times rather than pound notes as labour can vary enormously e.g., from £20/hr to £60/hr.

Yes, I understood what Dan was saying, the garage I use is £30 an hour, so not too bad a scenario I think! Thanks for your concern
