okay, 2.0 efi race car. New engine recently fitted and has been flushed. The engine overheated when it came off a rolling road, took the car to Mallory and the car overheated at the end of qualifying. Then, over heated on lap seven of twelve.

steps to try to rectify:

engine did not have a working fan so:

1. replace the radiator with a large radiator and wired up the fan.
2. flushed out the radiator and all the hoses
3. put in Radflush and ran the engine for 15 minutes
4. re: emptied the radiator, flushed and filled with correct coolant level
5. ran the engine for 10 minutes and drove it around for a bit
6. replaced the pressure cap with a brand new one

results:
1. fan activated above half way on the gauge.
2. temp continued to rise to just under red and held position
3. ran the engine at high revs for three minutes and gauge began to creap though slowly into the red.

the engine is still running way too hot, i am thinking it is either the thermostat or something more sinister.

Will contact my race engineer on Monday but until then any thoughts or suggestions?

Philip

Water pump is fine, i wondered that too....

got fed up sitting here, so i went back down to the garage 30 mins ago and did what i should have done today, and replaced the Thermostat, guess what? its all fine and hunky dory now.

Temp remained well below half, bleeding the cooling system was much easier as the thermostat house overflow had a blockage of rusty old metal bits, cleared it out and now it is fine.

Glad you got it sorted in the end. If you still want to further improve the cooling try adding a "water wetter" or other similar product. This helps to increase the cooling capacity of the water and can keep you the right side of overheating if you are pushed for cooling capacity.
