Hi i posted a thread a week ago regarding wheel bearings, i have recently found out the hum is coming from the shaft that goes from the drivers wheel into the drive. Any ideas on why its humming and how to fix. cheers ;)

Hi, I would say that it is unlikely there is anything wrong with the drive shaft its self causing a humming. The problem is more likely a front wheel bearing making the noise to appear to be coming from the shaft or less likely a final drive bearing noisey.

Cheers Gary :)

Hi , i thought that to but when i jacked it up and spun the wheel the noise was coming from the hub at the other end of the shaft. cheers

Hi, Perhaps the final drive bearings are noisey, has the gearbox been run low on oil? As a general rule if the final drive bearings were causing the noise, the noise would respond to road speed and load, and not change in tone significantly when cornering as a wheel bearing would.

Cheers Gary :)

Hi, yes it does not change tone when cornering its not very loud more anoying, would it be a hard job to do its only done 77000 miles but has done 5000 in the last 2 months.

It could be a worn Inner CV joint but they don't often go wrong.

I had an annoying drone which seemed to come from the front drive shafts area.
it didn't change on cornering and changed note with increase/decrease in speed.
The noised stopped immediately after I replaced both driveshafts and hubs(as a complete assembly) with units bought at Ledbury.
So I think it could be hubs

You probably had an "inner" bearing on the front hub with the case hardening broken up. This won't "load up" when you corner the car in the same way the outer does. My dad had exactly the same symptoms as you describe. He would not believe me so I swopped the complete hub and drive shaft from my car (soon to be scrapped but still on the road) over with his to prove the point. Now he has a quiet car and I don't!!.Why do the bearings seem to have such a short life?.I Replaced his myself only about 2 years ago

The earlier bearings which have two seperate bearings have a short life. The later ones have a reasonable life of 60-100k ish.
