Dan is king of A series headgaskets (did a few on mine before we replaced it with a nearly new engine). Out in early hours of the morning one time, fixing it with a torch so we could go to cornwall.
Oh did I mention it was Christmas, so it was freezing outside. I was nicely tucked up in bed (us women have to get our priorities right ;))

Mmm A series :toothy:
Has the HG gone on your Ledbury, or are you just doing it for the sake of it? The A series is fairly indestructable (unless you are Dan or Linds, seemingly - should've see that engine when we took it apart!! Still, it makes a nice plant pot... ;))

Because she is a lazy cow who needs her beauty sleep ;) :D
Why do you want to replace the gasket? Do you definatly know for sure it has gone?
Assuming it has the hardest part about the job is removing the exhaust and inlet manifolds (getting the bolts off of the studs in the head) If you can get these off then the rest is straight forward. The only "special" tool would be a torque wrench and if you are refurbishing the head a valve spring compressor tool so that you can replace the valve stem seals and re-grind the valves in. Oh yes when you've finished you will need some feeler gauges to set up the valve clearances too. Otherwise a socket set and some spanners should do the trick.
Time wise it took me a day (10hrs) to do the first one I did and then about half a day (5hrs) to do them subsequently. (I had a cracked block!)

yes.....the headgasket seems to be leaking from the back of the head on the right hand side as you look at the engine..
