Undo the bolts and the struts, you will need help with people taking the weight of the boot. I seem to remember the bolts are underneath the headliniong. Can you not treat the rust on the car, rather than taking the panel off, less hassle?

You will need to undo the rubber tubing for the washers from the fixing near the motor at the bottom of the. To do this you will need to remove the plastic cover. Also be careful of the wiring, I seem to remember there's a connector somewhere in the tailgate which can be disconnected to allow the tailgate to be removed.

Heres what you do, in no particular order.
The wiring can be disconnected in two ways. In the left hand side access panel behind the left hand light cluster (looking into the boot) there are the multiplugs which connect to the tailgate loom. You can unplug here, tie some
string to the wires to be able to pull them back through. This will allow the wiring to stay in the tailgate.
Alternativly, remove all the connectors inside the tailgate, and tie some string on, and gently pull the wires through the tailagte. Leave the string in to pull them back with. The washer hose should be disconnected from inside the tailgate, again using the string method.
Remove the spring clips on the gas struts. They just prise off with a screwdriver, you will need someone to hold it while you do this.
Remove the top of the tailgate door seal, and then the trim on the top of the headlining which makes the edge at the back of it. There are some very delicate plastic bits on this which lock in under the seal, so be careful removing it. This will allow you to drop the back of the headlining, and you will be able to access the nuts from here. There are two nuts on each hinge, which are held on with 6mm nuts (I think) so you will need a 10mm socket. The studs are fixed to the hinge so will not need counter holding. There will be some spacers in there. Keep them, and remember which one went where, as if you are re-fitting the same tailgate they will have to go back the same to keep the alignment.
