I would just like to say thanks to all the people on this forum who have helped me over the years with my maestro. It unfortunately died on saturday, due to a severe under bonnet fire, caused by (I think) a faulty fuel pump as purchased on ebay last week. The car is beyond economic repair as everything under the bonnet melted, but if anyone wants any spare parts, the car is currently in Avon
Autospares (scrapyard) in Rugby, where it still has plenty of good bits, including;

Digital dashboard, Voice synthesizer, Fuel meter,
VDP Velour seats,
elec windows (with mk1 door bin switches etc)
Full mg spoilers, including the front splitter
MG montego plastic wheel trims (14")
Wooden door veneers,

The car is (was) an early 1.6 HLS which was 1983, one of the first with an excellent body. The doors/sheel etc were excellent, with only minor rust here and there. I have had to replace it with a Peugeot 205 dieslel as I didnt have time to find a decent maestro TD.

I hope to return to the fold one day.....

I have lost a lovely car that was in great condition, so in the meantime, please all check your fuel pipe unions (the rubber pipes were in place but the metal pipe stub had fell out of the pump).

many thanks

I'm gutted for you. Are you sure it isn't savable?
I hope you get another one sometime soon and that the insurance company pay up in full.

Sorry to hear that, Martin. What a rotten bit of luck.

Thanks for the tip about checking the fuel pump - it's good advice for those of us with early cars. You've just prompted me to buy a new one for JOE as the current one is 20 years old and a bit dodgy, hopefully I'll avoid a similar problem.

In the meantime is anyone planning to strip the remains of Martin's car? I would do it if I lived closer to Rugby and actually still might of nobody else does. I need some digidash bits although sadly the speedo transducer which I need the most will be melted :(

It is always a shame to see an old faithful stripped but after it's in the scrapper the bits might as well go to making other Maestros well again.

Just had a chat with the bloke at the scrapper as I was worried he might just crush the car as most people seem to treat Maestros like that these days. Rather promisingly the car is in with all the dead classics and will not be crushed until it's stripped. First time I've heard a Maestro being deemed a classic at a scrapper! :D

I'm prolly going over there on Saturday (it's only 55 miles) to get the bits I want, so if there are any bits others are interested in please let me know.

The list currently stands at:

Me: Digital dash stuff including sensors and wiring
Linds: Gearbox gaiter if intact ;)

Thanks for thinking about it for me :) The other things we may be interested in is the wiring for the electric windows/door bin switches, and the front splitter (the vans had an argument with some ramps) depending on price.

If the interior is brown I would be interested in the air vent stickers if they are mint.

I think you have Dans mobile number to ring and check about what we would definitely want when you get there.

Many Thanks

Lindz

Martin,

Sorry to hear about your car. I always wonder about some of the parts on eBay, but i guess theres no telling if it was the fuel pump.

I thought i would let you know that I may have a spotless almost rust free low mileage Maestro 2.0 Efi available from a colleague. He tells me it is rust free with 60K on the clock.

Price £950 ono. am waiting for some pics, but sounds a real treat.

Let me know if you are interested.

Phil

if the interior is brown, i'd be interested in some bits for my VP.

And if it's blue I'd like *insert list here* for my VP ;) :o

That is a real shame to hear, Martin, I hope you find a replacement Maestro soon. And it will serve as a reminder to us all, I hope, that we should make sure components such as these are up to scratch, and also to carry a fire extinguisher!

That's really sad news, Martin, and a warning to us all. I tend to check my cars' fuel pipes, but never the stubs on the fuel pumps. We were taking an engine out of a scrap car yesterday and attempting to remove the fuel inlet pipe was rewarded by the stub staying in the pipe and coming away from the pump...

I also discovered yesterday that the left hand half of my Maestro VP's rear seat back had 'welded' or 'glued' itself (goodness knows how, it was ok last August :banghead: ) to the plastic under the quarter window, so if there is a brown raschelle velour near side rear seat back going spare that is unripped please can I have it?

Good news that the car is recognised as a classic at the scrapyard, but bad news that we found this out this way.

D'oh! Suddenly I'm busy this saturday with another car-related commitment.

I'll have to reschedule the removal of the parts perhaps for next weekend.... I'll ring them and get the car saved at least until then.

If you can wait a few weeks, you can have me Maestro for FREE!!

I'm waiting for a moving date now, but as soon as I've moved, the car is available...

Sorry to hear about your car's demise....
